Anyone who was peddling the whole “Vance doesn’t have the charisma” charade is lying to themselves. It was never about charisma. The Republicans lined up this way behind Dubya as well and smeared Kerry, a veteran with actual service history, while backing Bush who failed to even finish his term as an Air National Guardsman and probably skipped his physical because he was busy snorting cocaine off a hookers ass.
It has never been about charisma, and that should be fucking evident because Trump has none. Bush did the same thing that Trump did: He used the current political climate to allow them to find someone to pin the idea of Otherness on. Post 9/11 it was anyone who was even vaguely Islamic. The followers got to hate freely, and they loved it. They are being given the same permission all over again, to hate freely.
Vance will give them that same permission to hate. That’s all it was ever about.
Dubya had serious rizz. Stupid rizz, but that was like his whole thing. There was a whole discourse around “he’s the sort of guy you’d want to grab a beer with”. People found Bush much more charismatic than Kerry on the whole.
Also, say what you want about trump, but charisma is like the one thing he has. It’s super grating to me, but a lot of people find his whole schtick very magnetic.
I say this as someone who fucking loathed George W. Bush: John Kerry had even less charisma. I couldn’t fucking believe that somehow primary voters decided they wanted John Kerry when John Edwards, Howard Dean, and Wesley Clark were potential alternatives. John Kerry had less charisma than a pile of mildewy laundry.
Pretty sure I heard Bush, before running, presented as well spoken and intelligent. Somewhere along the way he was told that would be off-putting to many voters and to dial it back a bit.
Yeah there were old vids of him doing debates, IIRC and he was rather sharp and they were contrasted with the way he came off during his two terms, and he seemed…less sharp, let’s say.
Can’t say I agree. People are feeling the squeeze from the system, and Trump has the charisma to make people think he wants them to be as rich as he is, and distract from everything he does to make that squeeze even bigger. If you don’t have the right personality to sell your idea, it’s not going to get anywhere. Vance could be ideologically similar to Bernie Sanders, but if he pitches it with his “cinnamon rolls, whatever makes sense” energy I might be looking the other way. Hell, Trump even got some Bernie voters!

Maybe it’s because he stopped partying.
