While the campaign paid in advance due to Asheville’s policy for short-notice bookings, Trump has a long history of failing to pay cities for billed rally fees, leaving the White House in January 2021 with at least $850,000 in unpaid rally debt. Most of the bills are still unpaid, including more than $500,000 owed to The city of El Paso, Texas.
The Trump campaign booked the smaller of two venues at the same complex in downtown Asheville for Wednesday’s rally. The Thomas Wolfe Auditorium has a capacity of just 2,431 people, while a larger arena next door that is not hosting Trump has a capacity of 7,200.
Who’s not able to fill an arena now?
Smaller venues look more full and televised it’s easy to lie about crowd size. Folks pointed out empty seats at a prior rally so I’m sure that’s why the decision was made.
Now we can make fun of him for picking an arena 1/3 the size and point out even he knows his numbers are bunk. Bonus points of we still get empty seats.
Alot of the locals signed up for the free tickets with no intention of actually going.
Plus it’s a Thursday afternoon. Most of his cult members are at one of their jobs.
They should go and heckle him instead, have one just record it all
It’s similar to when a guy shaves his pubes, hoping to make his dick appear bigger.
Harris should book the other one the same night.
Let’s see who’s the bigger draw.
Campaign counterprogramming, I like it!
Hope this catches on. Don’t get grifted. A trump never pays
That’s the informal motto of House Trump:
A Trump never pays his debts
Trump non solvit debita
I know this is Latin, but I can’t help hearing it like Vanilla Ice:
If there was a problem, Trump non solvit
Check out his debt while DJT devolves it
I wish, this has been his MO since the eighties. He NEVER pays if he can wiggle out of it.

He left the White House. At the time he left the White House he had $850k in debt.
The sentence is vague but this is how I read it (mostly because, you’re right, the other way doesn’t make sense).

I believe that could have been worded better. Pretty sure it means that T owed 850,000 when he left the White House.

the campaign paid in advance due to Asheville’s policy for short-notice bookings
So it’s a non-story, nothing to do with Trump.
I put the following paragraph from the article in the summary for the original post:
While the campaign paid in advance due to Asheville’s policy for short-notice bookings, Trump has a long history of failing to paycities for billed rally fees, leaving the White House in January 2021 with at least $850,000 in unpaid rally debt. It seems some Lemmy clients don’t show the summary of cross posts.
Seriously no one should ever incur any expense based on trumps promise though. Everyone should make him pay up front. Especially his lawyers
Glad this is the top comment. I really dislike headlines like this. Why be manipulative when DJT is a seemingly bottomless well of actual things to be angry about?

In other words Trump isn’t to be trusted
// Also not a top comment either, so prolly extends to his idiot fan base too
No shit he isn’t to be trusted, but that’s not why Asheville made his campaign pay in advance. So why do a story on that when there are a million actual things he and his campaign are doing or planning to do to prevent a free and fair election? Why write a story that makes it seem like we need to reach?
It’s irresponsible journalism and the comment I replied to (which was the top comment 7 hours ago, if I may steal a moment to acquaint you with the concept of the passage of time) rightfully drew attention to that fact.
MAGA is planning to steal this election if they can’t win it. We need more column-inches on that and less of this petty non-story shit, even if it makes us feel good.
And that makes me a Trump Supporter. Check your media literacy.
They are learning, slowly.
“This one trick will make you a shewed business man: don’t pay your bills.”
Shit, I’ve been doing that for years!
Still more qualified than him.
Yes; that’s based on me only knowing you have one trait in common with him.
It is good that the cities and venues learn about Trumps’ campaign habit of not paying the bills.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he only got a rally every other week or even less because of this, especially in the campaign endgame?
Why Asheville? It’s a pretty heavily Democrat area of NC. Seems like an odd choice for a Trump rally.
It’s probably because it’s a city that has a large enough venue to host nearby rural folks who are his target demographic. If I had to guess, it will have low local attendance and the audience will largely be made up of people whining about Asheville and its residents.
This is how it was in my region of California last time he was here. Lots of folks from the surrounding sub regions but not many from the core areas, its not like the Inland Empire is some leftist stronghold its just locals dont care about that trite culturally so ya can only get more younger populations of yuppies and the like. Note younger in this context means your family located here sometime after the 70s, and if you are talking to an old bastard that timescale is pushed back to the before ww2.
Ah the liberal Asheville is smart enough to make him pay beforehand, but still not smart enough not to do business with a con man who wants to overthrow them
January 2021 with at least $850,000 in unpaid rally debt
Cool, so, any cities that he owes debt to, have them remove him from the election ballots in their state(s) until he pays what he owes.
I’d argue this is always good policy. Pay up front or no deal.
Hey somebody finally figured out out. I mean gas stations started doing this in the 90s at the very least.
Don’t stop there!
