They level the playing field by pointing the finger away from themselves for what they themselves are doing. It’s no longer just them doing something shitty, it’s everyone, or no one. It becomes the childish “no you!” response that kills any argument that could be had if someone from the opposition criticizes them.
Republicans do a thing, baselessly accuse Democrats of doing that thing, so idiots conclude “oh, both sides are accusing each other of doing that thing, it’s probably not happening.”
