It’s YouTube music, which is showing popular “podcasts” on its explore page. Must be just because it’s popular because nothing in my algo on either youtube or YouTube music would suggest this shit.

I started watching a lot of home-improvement type videos on YouTube, and suddenly since then all the ads now assume my dick is horribly bent and doesn’t work, and that I uncontrollably shit and piss myself.

It’s so pervasive I can’t even watch YouTube on my living room TV with my young kids around because I would have to explain way too much to them.

A few years back I dived in to men’s mental health on youtube. My husband and I were in a rough patch and I just wanted to see some content created by men to maybe reach/understand him better.

the aglo went… bananas. I couldnt believe how fast shit went to a scary and innapropriate place. Nothinh was helpful in tje end.

I also watch a lot of home improvement videos on YouTube, and I’ve never seen one of these ads that you speak of. I think there may be some sort of cross-watching or other things going on in your life that you are either unaware of or unwilling to admit on the internet…

That guy is probably as incel as Trump is common men’s ally. And the images of women are carefully chosen to stoke the sexual frustration that the incels are incapable of resolving without resorting to violence.

Qobuz, Tidal or Deezer, dude. All of them actually pay the artists for their streams. I’ve used two first and both of them are great for music.

Just pirate your music. It’s more ethical than giving money to Google or Spotify. If you want to support some musicians, buying a single piece of merch probably makes them more money than a lifetime of listening to them on a streaming service.

Money isnt that relevant directly, streaming is good for optics, you get a lot of streams you are more likely to get live shows and have your music pushed out to others that will go there? It’s good for discoverability and credibility.

But this is because of the naivety and lack of critical thinking skills. Not because they are young.

Rather, because public education has been gutted to prevent kids from being taught such skills.

And even more egregiously, taught to be incurious. To not ask questions. To obey.

This is not just because of public education gutting. It’s a worldwide phenomenon, even in places with the highest ranked public schools on earth.

the simple truth is bombarding someone with a certain way of seeing the world makes them more likely to see the world that way. It’s propaganda, plain and simple.

That slop doesn’t work on us, but there are an alarming number of people who see content and just agree with it. No critical thinking whatsoever. I used to think that was just the Boomers and maybe some jaded Gen X folk; but the mass-dependency on generative AI showed me that Gen Z and Millenials are just as susceptible.

I suspect the slop only works on people who already nominally believe or agree with it.

Like it’s no surprise there’s so many women-haters in the Christian faith. Because if you read the scriptures at face value god hates women, just as one example.

Edit: As for ai shit, it’s less that everyone buys it or whatever, it’s that the accept the ai as authoritative because they don’t understand how it works. And it’s presented as a convincing thing. It still takes a lot to produce a convincing deepfake.

And… a weird mix of civil rights people showing bad behavior of police, and police supporter showing bad behavior of people (honestly both are entertaining, because police are awful and so are people).

Weird. Youtube doesn’t do that to me. It is insistant however that I need to watch AI made videos about why linux is better than linux.

No, not a typo. The titles are usually along the lines of “Is Mint better than linux? Lets find out!”

      Or

“Ubuntu just can’t compete with Linux!”

And the one time I accidently clicked one of these videos, it was the most obvious AI slop you’d ever seen.

Maybe it doesn’t suggest these right wing videos because they see how much Steven Colbert, and Last Week Tonight I watch.

Then there’s the weird videos. Not AI. Just…weird.

Like the video of a teenager dipping a pickle into a jar of tostitos queso, and repeatedly saying “pickles n cheese, pickles n cheese, pickles n cheese…” while making squishing noises with the cheese.

But since I clicked it, and watched 30 seconds of it, youtube now reccomends me videos from time to time of this guy doing random things with pickles.

I miss when it reccomended the guy with the duck. The duck was cool.

it’s just rage bait. I guess nazis get “woke” videos, or whatever they consider the other side. goog only cares about money. If they would want to convert you they would show only a bit more conservative each time and slowly get to the far side. Showing the total opposite hardly convinces anyone, basically the viewer would have to accept that all their previous believes were false, it rarely happens.

Youtube is unironically, completely a tool of the far right. They’ve been pushing hate speech for the last decade+ like every other mainstream social media.

You can open a completely fresh account, look at absolutely anything at all, and your recs will have right wing slop.

People debate whether this was always intentional or just becuase it generates engagement, but imo it’s an intentional psyop because google is the devil

I figure its intentional because Google’s executives know right-wing chuds and their politicians will always push corporate-friendly and ultrarich-friendly legislation like tax cuts, deregulation, and defanged government institutions.

But I’m in agreement that it’s likely done with glee by YouTube’s team, who seem as happy to promote right-wing chuds as they do to stamp out left-wing voices from the feed.

Example: I sometimes search for videos I’ve seen from subscriptions, and using the exact title of the video and the creator I still have to wade through three or four pages of search results with far different titles - scrolling past heaps of ideologically-opposite results as I go - to finally find the real video. That’s no mistake, thats an intentional finger on the scale to hide leftist voices.

My assumption is the bias is unintentional, at least partially, and just the priorities of recommendations is weighed heavily to encourage engagement above all else, and stoking fear and anger drives engagement. Also the distribution of content could be a factor. On the right, it seems like everyone is trying to get in on the grift of advertising elk meat or trump coin to exploit their viewers, meanwhile high quality journalism and news is under funded. For every Climate Town or A More Perfect Union, there’s tens or hundreds of right wing fearmongering videos.

The rage-stoking flamebait is definitely a real thing on all social media to drive engagement. But the only explanation for searching for an exact video name with the name of the creator, and the desired video not being in the top few hits but rather buried below dozens and dozens of other results is suppression of that creator. And it happens repeatedly for left-wing creators. That can’t be explained by the ‘I need to feed attention all the time’ algorithm.

There’s actually a simpler explanation. Companies will purposefully make their products worse to keep you using them longer. By prioritizing the algorithm over your search results you’re staying in the app longer, seeing more algo suggestions, and more likely to give up on your search and click something else.

Good examples of this are Google purposefully crippling their own search, or Netflix making it impossible to see what movies they actually have. So they kneecap the product. What are you going to do? Stop using it? If the answer is no, then there’s room to make it just a little worse…

That is another real thing, that doesn’t fit this example.

If it did, any video on other topics would not be in the top few results - and yet in my unscientific testing of several random video titles and authors, they all come up in either the first result or in the first row.

Different experience for searching leftist videos.
