The US military has developed new strike plans that include potentially using the so-called “mother of all bombs” to target Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear sites should President Donald Trump give the order to resume combat operations either before or after the midterm elections, according to multiple US officials familiar with the matter.

Using the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb or MOAB, the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal, for the first time in the conflict with Iran would mark a notable escalation, even though there are doubts over how effective it would be in accomplishing any of Trump’s stated strategic objectives or tipping the balance of the war, multiple sources familiar with internal military planning discussions about potentially deploying the weapon said.

Trump is facing pressure to bring an end to the deeply unpopular war — as Republicans brace for potential political backlash from voters in the upcoming midterm elections and there is little indication the two countries are close to a negotiated resolution after more than six months of US bombing.

Brilliant. Definitely escalate the pointless war you’re losing. Definitely use more expensive munitions after demonstrating how quickly you have exhausted your munition supplies.

Moab can destroy several city blocks. It’s nearly impossible to use without killing innocent unless done on a military base. But you pretty much have to have total air superiority to use one because it’s delivered by cargo plane.

No problem they found a secret nuclear reactor right in the center of Iran. Right in between the to the kindergarten and wedding hall.

This will be mostly performative, as these are meant to bust traditional buried infrastructure, and can’t do anything to find and penetrate secret depots and bases buried beep beneath mountains. This will just prolong trumps Iranian forever war and continue the spread to other nations, which will increase and prolong the economic pain at home in the US, and increase the chances of terror events in the US as well.

Also, isn’t this thing so big it has to be chucked out of a cargo aircraft? I wouldn’t want to fly a c-130 into Iran right now…

I don’t know how they plan to even get it there. There is a reason the US is running low on munitions, but selling Israel a shit load of dumb bombs. We can’t get close enough to Iran to use them. The US had to pullback its aircraft carriers recently for fear of missiles sinking them.

I’m worried that this is the compromise option he’s been talked down to as an alternative to nukes. Playing for time to see if he kicks the bucket, a peace deal is reached, or other obstacles are put in place first to keep the button un-pressed for a little while longer.

He may be a terrible steward, but he isn’t a mad dog surrounded by doctors and caregivers. When he is stepped down there will be other with similar enough policies. Charismatic leaders only matter so much and there is a greater movement. With others being more… Cunning and evil.

I don’t think his next-in-line would be much better but at least he comes in with more to lose personally if one thing leads to another and we all get to see how MAD plays out.

Yeah, no. Trump isn’t the most radical and willing to die. Hitler wasn’t the most radical either, not for he wasn’t but because the followers have a much greater opportunity for fanaticism. This isn’t a great comparison by any means. Looking at more current events the Ayatollah was replaced by much more fanaticals, too. Much maligned Netanjahu also has many more radical people behind him, and he is being posed as a ‘new hitler’ by many.

Like pooTin, tRump could just stop being the agressor and walk the fak away to stop the war he illegally started, but here we are… at the mercy of the whims of inbred-corporate-imbecils who found their first hammer and now everything looks like a nail

This is like watching my two least favourite fighters jab and teep each other to a 5 round boring decision.
