U.S. Rep. David Scott, a Georgia Democrat and the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, has died. He was 80.
Scott, who was seeking his 13th term in Congress despite challenges from within his party, was once a leading voice for Democrats on issues related to farm aid policy and food aid for consumers and a prominent Black member of the party’s moderate Blue Dog caucus. But he faced criticism and concerns in recent years because of declining health, enduring a primary challenge in 2024 and facing another one at the time of his death.
Scott’s death slightly widens Republicans’ narrow House majority going into the thick of this midterm election year The GOP began the current Congress with a 220-215 advantage, but the margin has fluctuated. Scott is the fourth House Democrat to die in office during this Congress.
We need to do something to prevent people from staying in office until they drop dead.
We need to do something to prevent Blue Dogs from staying in office
Some people have no respect for Blue’s Clues.
That’s probably going to hurt him in the polls
Dead men have won elections before. In 2000, the people of Missouri had an election for a US Senator. Their choices were John Ashcroft and a dead man. And the people of Missouri said “Sorry John, but the dead guy scares us less”. 1
20+ years of voter suppression bullshit later and reasonable results like that are a lot harder to come by in the state of misery
Scott is the fourth House Democrat to die in office during this Congress.
I’m very against anti aging tech for these kinds of reasons…
Depends on implementation. Does it keep people sharp, focused, effective, and healthy well into their old age? Fabulous. Does it make people simply limp along like they’re half-dead already well into their old age? Fuck that.
No, it doesn’t depend on implementation, because I don’t want the same inevitably-increasingly-corrupt-and-out-of-touch fuckwads running the place in perpetuity even if they remain sharp and focused!
The older generations have to get the fuck out of the way in order for the newer ones to have opportunity. Otherwise, younger people end up being a permanent underclass.
I feel like reasonable term limits in congress is a little more humane than denying people Healthcare access…
The mobility of society is strongly reliant on people dying at this point. Think about this: even in a perfect democracy, old people will vote for their healthcare over young people’s lives to build new families and get a majority. This margin will be exaggerated by the anti aging tech.
