Harry Dunn, a U.S. Capitol Police officer who defended the building during the Jan. 6 riot, is joining a wide field seeking the seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District.

Dunn, 40, who was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and Presidential Citizens Medal and published a memoir last year called “Standing my Ground,” announced his candidacy for the Democratic primary on Friday, almost exactly three years after a day that he said took a toll on his emotional health.

“On January 6th, 2021, I did my duty as a police officer and as an American and defended our nation’s Capitol from violent insurrectionists,” Dunn said in a release on Friday. “Today, I’m running for Congress because the forces that spurred that violent attack are still at work and as a patriotic American, it is my duty to defend our democracy.”

Site covered up all content with ads on mobile. Was this the guy that got the mob to chase him away from the route congress was fleeing down? If so, that’s some real clout.

No he is not. You are thinking of Eugene Goodman.

Harry Dunn had physical altercations with rioters. He testified for the Jan 6 committee and he wrote a book called standing my ground. (Source:wiki, all articles rn are about him running)

I agree, except this guy showed great bavery and upheld the standard that we’ve been fighting for police to have. He could have run and hide, but he protected our democracy. We need more cops like him. Putting him in office may very well help us achieve that goal.

I disagree. Some cops are great, but because of police unions, the bad ones are protected and make it seem like they are mostly bad.

Do you know his history or what cop shit he got up to day-to-day prior to these events?

          Are they all bastards though?

You don’t think there’s any of them out there trying to actually help?

If you think it’s all about getting power and bullying others, then I’d say you’re showing us what human dynamics you think have the highest value. Like a form of projection.

There are genuine people that actually do want to help that work in these fields.

Would you want to keep showing up to the worst day of peoples lives and see how you can help? Like the constant shootings, stabbings, car crashes, or domestic violence for example.

If it was all about power, there’s way more lucrative industries that require half the effort.

I have no idea what this dude’s background is like specifically, maybe he is a bag of shit, but it’s unfair to lump every individual person into black and white categories

The system within which they work is inherently and systemically racist. That system puts property above life and intends to secure and protect property at all costs. Indeed ACAB

That being said. If elected he will no longer be a cop and may in fact enact positive change for those in his district. Until I see his platform and his associates I withhold judgement as I believe all humans can reform and improve. When we dehumanize all people on the basis of their history and do not take their current behavior into account we are just as bad as the fascists we hate.

There are rare cases where officers change their stripes or naively enter into police work thinking they can reform departments from within.

Look to Sgt. Isaac Lambert and other whistleblowers that are now actively campaigning for either abolition or reform.

So like… Don’t molest children. If you enforce that law… It’s white supremacy. Rape? Murder? Mugging?

They dont enforce laws on any of those issues. By the time those events happen is up to the purview of the courts.

SCOTUS has ruled they are not obligated to protect or serve.

They are still kind of sort of part of getting them into those courts…right?

Yes I know what the SCOTUS said and thats a whole other fucking can of worms. What I think needs to be done to fix the police in this shithole country is a LONG FUCKING RANT but im just saying…you know. Its not inherently racist to have laws and enforce them. We just have a bunch of racist fucks who need to be fucking dealt with HARSHLY enforcing them racially.

Obviously laws don’t exist in countries where white people are a minority. But if they did, and they hired citizens to enforce it, they’re now racists and bigots forever

The funnier part is if you think this through to its logical conclusion he’s saying only minorities commit crimes as the laws to stop the crimes are white supremacy.

It’s not the first time ive seen someone trying so hard to show the are not racist that the end up saying some racist fucking shit.

It applies to a systemic issue not to individuals, that’s the entire point, we say there’s no good cops because the good cops aren’t given a voice and are silenced or pushed out by the justice system. If a cop seeks to actively fight against or improve the system and manages to do so visibly then they are helping to combat the systemic issues that result in a society that needs sayings like “acab” and “no such thing as a good cop”. Cops actually doing shit to address a problem by campaigning is the ideal result of pushing those messages, it’s the louder more obvious pushback against that system that we want to actually see from cops. It misses the point and defeats the purpose to use those sayings and terms maliciously just to shoot down specific public figures who are actually trying to do something. They’re best used as political slogans in response to “bu-but some cops are good people” quibbling when fighting for police reform, so they actually serve a purpose, rather than just being mindless whining.

Now if he gets into office and doesn’t actually use his position to enact any improvements? Then by all means acab away, but otherwise you’re not helping at all.

Got any news articles about capitol police shooting people’s dogs, planting fake drugs, or arresting people for no reason?

Bout the only thing that’s happened at the capitol building recently was jan. 6. Don’t mix them up with the usual shitstain police you see in the news everyday.

I live in DC. There are like 8 police forces in the area. The only ones worse than Capitol Police are park police, and since the Obama administration that’s been in question, since Trump it might not even be true anymore. They are absolutely terrible.

This guy might be great, but as a general rule they’re low training, high fuck up, harassers of citizens. They shoot people that are clearly on drugs if they get near their area, they shot into a panicked woman’s car that had a baby in the seat, and that’s not even getting into the day to day reputation.
