Violence begets violence, so many religions say. Americans should know. After all, the United States – a nation founded on Indigenous genocide, African enslavement and open rebellion against an imperial power to protect its wealthiest citizens – cannot help but be violent. What’s more, violence in the US is political, and the violence the country has carried out overseas over the generations has always been connected to its imperialist ambitions and racism. From the US bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites on June 21 to the everyday violence in rhetoric and reality within the US, the likes of President Donald Trump continue to stoke the violent impulses of a violence‑prone nation.

    Uh, no?

Riots in France over unpopular political policies are so common that they’re a meme. Saudi Arabia overthrew it’s dictator via political violence. China, Russia, many others have had political violence on a massive scale.

Political violence is common. The only real difference is that–in theory–Americans have the tools to enforce regime change at home, should the citizenry choose to assert that ability. There are literally more guns than people (by a lot!) in the US, so our civil wars end up being some of the most bloody and brutal on the planet. (Roughly 2% of the entire US population died in battle in the US Civil War; US Civil War 2 would almost certainly be worse, since it wouldn’t be limited solely to direct military engagements.)

Political violence is quintessentially human and failing to acknowledge that puts other countries at an increased risk of being steamrolled by Authoritarian regimes as well.

    …brother are you a teenager?

This reeks of teen insight. Possibly the least educated assertion I’ve read in a long time.

Do you know where we get the fucking word “Resistance”??

    Its French.

Resistance is one thing, being at war constantly since our founding to say, “no, mine!” is the child bully mentality.

What I am saying is the French were beheading kings in the commons when America was in diapers.

I understood that and expanded on it.

I really don’t understand why when someone adds to a thought people seem to think it’s negating the original thought.

    I beg to differ.

Putin has been throwing people out of balconies and windows for a few decades.

    Hitler murdered millions.

Mussolini had his own populace murdered based on their politics.

Saddam Hussein murdered thousands, along with Gaddafi.

China is doing this right now with tens of thousands.

    Israel is as well.

I can go on and on. This is dumb fucking writing that is trying to ignore history and recent events. GTFO with this bullshit.

The US put economic pressure and sanctions that helped lead to the failure of the USSR. Without the US Putin would never have rose to power.

Hitler didn’t fund the Nazi party, wealthy people from the US did.

WWII would never have happened if the US didn’t turn its back on the League of Nations.

The US put Sadam Hussein in power.

The US helped create the instability in China that lead to the cultural revolution.

The US bankrolls, arms, and was fundamental in the creation of Israel.

I can go on and on. Trying to ignore history, GTFO!

Uh… more than half of these were/are fascists and the rest brutal military dictatorships + whatever China is. If that’s the company America has then you’re not really countering the article’s point.

*Political violence is quintessentially American Conservatism

A lot of that historical violence has been directed at minorities, social groups, marginalized groups, Indigenous people, LGBTQ+, union workers, blacks, Hispanics, women

If you want to narrow it all down … most of the American political violence, the majority of it over the past 200 years was driven by white Christian males who believe they are a ruling class and need to be on top overpowering everyone else for their own personal benefit … usually with the lame excuse that it is God’s will. And I honestly also don’t believe it has anything to do with God or Christianity or even religion … it’s just a small entitled group of people who just want all the power, all the money and all the control … you know the same jungle mentality of that one male monkey who wants all the bananas and all the females and be able to pound their chest and make everyone scared.

I’m Indigenous Canadian and this does not mean I want to jump over the political cliff and call for the end of all white Christian males … I’m just pointing out the history … and what I believe is that we can all coexist together without any one group dominating over another and everyone just living together equally - socially and economically.
