The place he lived in as a child has a population around 50k now and, best I can find, also did when he was born. This dudes parents emigrated to Florida but his dad was a doctor and his mother ended up buying a 4 bedroom house using money from her parents shortly after they moved to the US. Yeah I grew up around that region and you’re absolutely right it’s halfway between suburban and rural. Everyone I know from the area that’s read the book says he comes across as a middle class person cosplaying as Appalachian poor.
