And I agree the nation is in a terrible state, of course. But my criticism of the US is an attempt to improve it, where his is just conman instinct that a truth plus a lie goes down easier than two lies.

This makes total sense to me, coming from a mostly conservative family. They are so miserable and negative about everything, that negativity is how they communicate.
Their identity is based on the things they don’t like, their conversations consist of complaints and gossip, and their politics revolve around who they perceive needs to be knocked down a peg.
So I think it goes beyond them thinking he’s honest. His constant bitching, bullshitting, and punching down in place of solutions – they make him feel familiar and like he is one of them. (even though we know he hates them just as much as he hates everybody else)
He has fucked everything up with his incompetence and has no clue on how to fix any of it. He needs the Democrats to get a majority so he can hlame them for everything.
He wants the Dems to win just so he can claim, again, the massive amounts of fraud, have the corrupt scotus declare the midterms invalid and then the real party begins

That would actually be great, we can make some progress on fixing some of the myriad of things that trump has made worse.
