A man was convicted Wednesday of federal terrorism charges in the 2022 stabbing of Salman Rushdie, the author who has faced a decades-old death threat over his novel “The Satanic Verses.”

A jury found Hadi Matar guilty of all the charges against him, including engaging in an act of transnational terrorism.

A message seeking comment was sent to Matar’s attorneys.

Matar, 28, is already serving a 25-year New York state prison sentence on an attempted murder conviction in the August 2022 attack on an amphitheater stage. The federal conviction carries a potential life sentence.

Rushdie, who was about to speak on writers’ safety, was slashed 15 times in front of a stunned audience. He was gravely wounded and lost the sight in his right eye.

Interesting. I’m currently reading his book, Knife, about the attack.

TIL. I assumed his Curb episode would be the last time I heard about him. I didn’t even know this happened.

Religious extremists suck, regardless of the religion. This isn’t exceptional of Islam, my guy. Christian extremists do shit just as bad all the time.

Yeah, my comment trying to get you to acknowledge that you’re being islamophobic is the same as white people pretending that color blindness and ignorance are a sufficient substitute to bringing an end to systemic racism. Good take. Brain dead as fuck, but you sure did use words to reply. So, that’s something going for you. You’re still capable of human speech!

Don’t they know your form of bigotry is based in logic and reason? So much different than all those other bigotries that only have… wait… oh no! It looks they all rationalize themselves using logic and reason. But that can’t be, don’t they know that your bigotry is the only correct one? Surely… no… yeah… yep, it looks like there’s no fundamental difference between yours and anyone else’s. Just made up lines and people pissed about people being on different sides of those imaginary lines. Oh well, I guess that’s how the cookie crumbles

God isn’t real, it’s just a story made up by humans who didn’t know how the world worked and took a stab in the dark at the cause. It is voluntarily believed by billions of people on earth because of countless of different reasons. Some of those are worthy of scorn and derision; mad men using religion to control those around them, those who use their religion to bolster their hatred and bigotry. But for every one of those, there are many more people who use their religion to love and build community, support those in need, and generally share the love.

There, this comment is blasphemous but in a that’s way inoffensive towards any one people or religion. I’ll report myself and you’ll see if your interesting interpretation is true, or if the rule is about stopping bigotry.

The supreme leader of Iran declared a fatwa calling for his execution in the late 80s after he published The Satanic Verses, which is a novel about the prophet Muhammad that is considered blasphemous by conservative Muslims.

People have been trying to kill him in the name of Islam since. Mostly because the state of Iran has a $4 million USD bounty on his life, that is still on offer. Iranian state media does fundraisers to add to the pot every few years.

The attempts on his life are meant to silence free speech across international boarders and further religious ideology.
