  • Seriously. The damage Trump’s fragile ego has done to our nation is incalculable but undermining the integrity of our free elections is at the top of the list. I fear I’ll never see a Presidential election where a Republican will concede their loss without throwing a hissy fit in the courts ever again.

And if Trump wins in November, I definitely won’t, because as he said at a rally in July, “Get out and vote! Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore! Four more years, you know what? It’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore."

  • “THERE WILL BE NO REMATCH,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform. “SO THERE IS NOTHING TO DEBATE.”

Trotting out the classics, huh? Big “If we did less testing, we’d have less COVID cases” energy.

Trump said it was very late in the process now to have a debate.

The second Presidential Debate in 2020 took place on Oct. 22nd. This invitation from Fox News is for Oct. 24th or 27th. And the original CNN debate was scheduled for Oct. 23rd so fuck right off with that excuse, coward.

  • Too little too late. Fuck the New York Times and their sane-washing of Trump.

Behind The Bastards did an interesting two part episode covering the role that the media played in Italy, Germany and the U.S. which contributed to the rise of fascism throughout Europe during the 1920s and 1930s. Basically, their attempts to maintain neutrality only served to legitimize extremist rhetoric and present fascists as reasonable folks who just had different, but equally valid, ideas. So The New York Times is just perpetuating the status quo here by sane-washing Trump and legitimizing the extremist goals of the MAGA movement. At some point everyone has to take a side, and many media outlets, including the NYT, have a lengthy track record of choosing to align themselves with the right side of history only after the dust has settled.

If anyone would like to check out the episodes I’m talking about, here’s the YouTube version:

    Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URABscYOjRE

    Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW7FCJG9NjQ

Edit: Anyone suggesting the media should not reject fascism in the name of some misguided sense of objectivity will be ignored. I don’t debate the merits of legitimizing fascist movements.

  • While it’s great news that someone’s finally going to prison I can’t help but feel that 9 years out of the 20 that the prosecution were seeking is still a slap on the wrist. At 68 this may still prove to be a life sentence but I’d feel a lot better if she had received the max and removed all doubt. If anyone deserves it, it’s this woman, the judge even recognized she has no remorse for her crimes and would do it again if she had the chance.

These weak sentences are only going to embolden the republicans organizing the next attempt to steal the elections. And that one is mere weeks away.

  • Since people on Lemmy don’t read articles and only comment on headlines here’s why this is important:

As a deadly storm system approached the southeastern U.S. last week, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s office asked top state officials to support his call for emergency help.

He needed approval from the other elected officials in North Carolina’s executive branch, a group of nine known as the Council of State, to exercise certain authorities under the N.C. Emergency Management Act. Their blessing would enable the Democratic governor to more easily mobilize rescue vehicles, order evacuations and begin other emergency actions by waiving some of the state’s transportation regulations for heavy vehicles.

Mark Robinson did not support the people of North Carolina when they needed him, but also keeps publicly insisting that Gov Cooper do more. Basically, he is and always will be a total fucking piece of shit.

  • You misread my comment. I said “just” as in “simply” not “recently.” Words can have multiple meanings and uses. My point was that this is not an abrupt decision and has been in the works for quite a while because of the war, but it was not based on a decision “specifically tied to a recent development” in said war because it had been announced months ago in June when Belarus got kicked out. They just/simply have been waiting for the contracts of both groups of scientists to expire before sending them home for quite some time.

  • I recall this being announced earlier in the year, and it’s the result of current (5yr) contracts expiring and not specifically tied to a recent development in the war or anything like that. CERN just decided not to renew contracts with Russian scientists who are solely affiliated with Russian institutes but had to wait for them to run out, and as the article points out, this already happened to scientists from Belarus back in June.
