As the billionaire and his allied groups pour more than $20 million into a race for the state’s top court, his car company is suing Wisconsin over a law restricting vehicle sales.

In March 2023, Tesla applied for licenses to open four dealerships in the state. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation denied the request because of the state law forbidding direct car sales to consumers.

“It is no coincidence that Elon Musk started spending that money within days of Tesla filing a lawsuit in Wisconsin,” Judge Crawford said during a televised debate this month.

    The manufacturers actually quite like offloading the challenge of selling cars to the dealerships. They force the dealerships to buy their inventory on loan, and reap quite the profit. I remember that one manufacturer made a full third of its profit solely by the interest paid by dealerships who have vehicles sitting on the showroom floor.
