They’re not doing it. The cloud providers are doing it so we will all have to pay for cloud subscriptions. I will stay on my PS5 until the AI bubble implodes and all the hardware ends up on the 2nd hand market.

Well single processors could be taken for local inference. But yes not for graphics. But once the market is swamped in inference hardware it will leave them desperate to get back into the gaming market which will be good for us normies.

And then they totally lost me at the still image comparison between Xbox One and XSX and related talk about how games look mostly the same across gens. Anyone who has played the pictured game (Halo Infinite) on both knows how the visual differences are huge - better resolution, higher frame rate, WAY better draw distance, texture popping reduction, etc.

That’s a strange callout. Why would he required to mention the existence of more expensive models when he’s calling out the lack of a cheaper mid cycle refresh? That’s like the exact opposite of what he wants.
I was at a large electronics retailer here in Germany recently and a new Xbox Series X was 599€ (launch price was 499€). A digital-only PS5 was 499€ (launch price was 399€).
The hardware hasn’t changed at all, apart from minor revisions maybe, since launch mind you.
But the memory and storage in them has gone up by around 200-300 euros so the current prices aren’t going to last long either.
My real problem is that they’re basically computers but they’re locked down. A few hundred more and I can get something completely customizable, with a wider selection of games at better prices, and performance is about the same. And of course you can do a lot more with a regular PC.
I’d be more open to buying one if they supported running Linux OOTB (without hacking or voiding warranties etc.) even if it was a dual boot or a VM situation. Either that or a big price drop. I thought consoles used to be able to do more with less because of high optimization but maybe that’s not a priority anymore.
No Jellyfin on PS5 and I’m like what is even the point
Better off with a NAS for jellyfin anyway so you don’t suddenly lose jellyfin for a moment when restarting your PC or start stuttering in games when someone’s watching something and it starts transcoding

Ah yeah, IMO neither consoles nor PCs are all that great for smartifying your TV in this day and age. There are cheap Android TV sticks and boxes you can use instead. Less power consumption than running a whole ass console or PC just to watch a movie, convenient remote, etc. Better app availability than consoles, simply more convenient to use on the big screen than a PC.
That’s what I’m doing, even though my PC is close enough to the TV to run a ~5 meter HDMI cable if I wanted to. Hell, I could play without jellyfin if I did, since I don’t have a separate server currently, but I still find my Android TV box more convenient.
As an upside, the Android TV box gets 4K+HDR streaming when I do use a streaming service (I have a deal where I share my Apple TV+ with a friend and get their Disney+ in return). My PC doesn’t do that because streaming services hate Linux users and limit Linux users to 1080p or lower.
Back when I used plex, I used to just use the TV app, but there isn’t one for Jellyfin on Samsung, so I just don’t let the TV itself connect to the internet anymore. Never should have in the first place, but it was pretty convenient till I needed Jellyfin
It used to be you had to research a lot to get a good pc but nowadays it’s kinda hard to go wrong so the argument that you don’t have to look up stuff with a console and you are ready to play is also making getting a console slightly less attractive.
