In short:
A spokesperson for Jacinda Ardern says the former New Zealand prime minister and her family are moving to Australia.
Dame Jacinda had been living in the US and working for Harvard University.
It comes after media reports saying the former PM and her husband had been looking at properties for sale in Sydney.
The exodus continues…
What’s going with New Zealand these days?
People are leaving. Boomers killed everyone with housing speculation and rent with no economy to support it. Anyone buying in NZ will surely lose money on a property.
She’s leaving the US not New Zealand, already left there.
My point is that she’s moving to Australia instead of just moving back home to NZ, so it counts as part of the current exodus.
Ameica is also experiencing an exodus right now. Which is what I figured the original comment was referring to.
Fair
Same as always. Beautiful country, not enough work, more opportunities just across the ditch on the east island (Australia). Migration from NZ to AU is basically a right of passage :)
Spoilers though: housing crisis in Oz is about the worst in the world.
Mrs Arden paid 4.3 million for her gaff in Sydney (according to sources). I’d love to tell you that was extreme for the market here but…its not as extreme as it use to be. My BIL’s first house in Melbourne (3x1) was 1.1 million…and that was 5 years ago. Its worth $2-3m now.
Any NZ or Aussie local to share some perspective? I’m fully OOTL
Migration from NZ to Australia is extremely common. The ‘Brain Drain’ this causes is a significant issue in NZ politics. Nearly 35,000 people moved from NZ to Australia in the last 12 months, a record number.
