Imagine being a fly and then having to walk dark hallways fighting demons.

    I find it disturbing

None of the neurons have weights attached, meaning the signals aren’t processed in any way that would support consciousness.

Regardless, now imagine having Bad Apple rendered on your neurons by an Eldritch God.

You shouldn’t. It’s just a neural net shaped like a fly brain. There’s no biochemistry simulation past that.

Eventually we can reduce the human brain down to this. Is it ethical to use that blueprint for experiments? We’ve got to be better than this, I hope. And it has to start before we get there.

No, we can’t. The biochemistry needs to be there. The fly brain is a discretized abstract model of the fly brain with none of the weights it would need to be an actual (discretized abstract) model.

whatever simulation its in, it would be the only “reality” it knows. With no knowledge of anything else its in best reality it “knows” of, provided its even possible to have anything else going on beyond actions made by computer that are based on some nebulous ruleset that the fruitfly brain runs on.

We spent decades mapping 166,000 neurons and the internet immediately made the fly play Doom, trade Bitcoin and parallel park. Honestly, that’s the most human possible response to a neuroscience breakthrough. Give us the map of a brain and within 48 hours someone will ask whether it can run Doom. Next milestone: the fly gets a LinkedIn account.

How long until we’re searching for the hidden porn folder on the fruitfly brain PC?

Isn’t the issue that we don’t know how and why neurons fire? We can scan the brain all we want, but if we don’t know how it actually works, then it doesn’t matter.
