Around here, people typically lease their phones. The numbers are intentionally obtuse and confusing because the lease is 2 years and then you can “buy it out” for a (still rather large) sum or roll it into a new model perpetually. You also get a discount from your service plan for leasing, putting the math outside your average adults ability.

Yeah quite a few people do that here, no interest in touching it myself. There is a huge supply of second hand phones though.
