22·3 months agoLike if you’re going to run out of gas in the next 20 miles and there isn’t an Exxon station within 100 miles, do you just pass all other gas stations and have your employees break down on the side of the road?
Honestly? Yeah, pawbably. Or you pay for it yourself and go through getting a reimbursement which may or may not happen.
Edit: Just like, you’re expecting companies to be intelligent and reasonable, and they just aren’t.

7·3 months agoIt’d be like if ExxonMobil didn’t allow their employees with company cars to fill up at a Chevron station.
That is likely very much the case. When you drive a company vehicle, you have a fuel card for fill-ups that is for a particular chain and doesn’t work anywhere else.

61·3 months agoThink small businesses, charities, local municipal services, etc. Small IT budgets, low staff (if any) and just enough to pad out a subscription cost to a service provider that fits their needs.
Did we not read the same comment? Not every service that was taken down was a website, like OP’s school. Plenty of small businesses, charities or local municipal services don’t have IT staff, commissioned their sites (including initialisation) and don’t necessarily know that 𝑥 company they pay, pays Amazon. Or how to do a whois search. You clearly don’t have a firm grasp on the realities of the world, nor work in IT “doing websites”.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•A lot of media depict the United States as being invaded by fascists from the outside. Nobody thought fascism will come from within until now.English
5·3 months agoYour media has been covering up for this descent into fascism my entire lifetime and I’m in my 30s. After 9/11 they literally, jingoistically called for the US to invade foreign countries, fear-mongered for views, all while dragging my country into those wars lest we end up like “freedom fries” France. I guess if you grew up in the Obama era, there would have seemed like a brief respite from the descent into fascism, but it was all political spin and no substance. Sitting where I am, the Democrats are a right-leaning party. THAT’S your “left wing” so anything further right is obviously going to be fascist in a country so nationalistic.
Trump LITERALLY incited an insurrection during his first term. Any “respected analyst” that wouldn’t call him a fascist just had too much faith in your already very broken institutions.
Mx is the gender neutral btw.

18·3 months agoYeah, as an Australian, when I learnt as a teen that they do the “pledge of allegiance” everyday in school, I kind of wondered how easy it would be to hijack that into something evil.

2·3 months agoA lot of the things they’ve said are either incorrect or contradicts other parts they’ve said.
I mean, their entire argument was that Apple is more private and more secure. So if you think that’s incorrect, you therefore must believe Stock Android is more private and more secure, no?

1·3 months agoI keep seeing things about how x, y or z company “caved” to government pressure, as if companies have ever made value judgements in the modern era. What this decision would have come down to, the only thing it could legally come down to, is shareholder value. Considering Apple secured a reprieve on tariffs, it’s absolutely within reason that Trump and/or his administration threatened them with cancelling said reprieve. At that point, the decision would be based off the loss of sales for taking it down, against the loss of sales of devices due to tariff price increases.
Apple has a fiduciary duty to their shareholders first and foremost. There is nothing stopping this batshit insane administration from enacting tariffs, and then using the SEC and DOJ to investigate and bring charges that they aren’t upholding their responsibilities to their investors.

1·3 months agoI understood that, I’m talking about even setting up the proxies on a device so you can access services. It’s my understanding that I2P is similar enough to Tor. A user setting themselves up to access a Tor service is still difficult for the average user, especially if they are time poor.

22·3 months agoDefine from the US. Are you saying those travelling in from internationally by air or road, that are getting stopped and generally detained by CBP, where ICE reporting apps would be useless because they aren’t making it to the broader community? Or are you saying those who are living and working in the US and pawbably have a US Apple account?

2·3 months agoIt’s not accessible enough to someone working 60-70hr weeks trying to make enough to survive as an illegal migrant in the US. Maybe if people were actually out there protecting their neighbours and being the ones checking these sorts of apps. But they’re all living paycheck to paycheck too and just aren’t. Trump’s current policies are literal decades in the making.

You’re already seeing multiple European governments moving to FOSS office suites.
