I try to contribute to things getting better, with humor, sourced information, OC and polite rational skepticism.
Disagreeing with a point ≠ supporting the opposite side, I support rationality.
Let’s discuss to make things better sustainably.
Always happy to question our beliefs.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•loyalty is unethical and unjust because it makes you systematically biased towards those that you are loyal to
4·10 days agoIf I’m loyal to someone, it is because this person earned it by being loyal to me too. It needs to go both ways.
Maybe you’re considering the feudal type of loyalty where it mostly goes up? I don’t support that, I would feel exploited.
If I think they are wrong, then my loyalty will not make me support them being wrong, it will motivate me to make them understand they are wrong.
It’s if I don’t care about someone that I will let them be wrong.

3·13 days agoYou will get an email at some point asking you if you would accept some well paid contract to train an LLM to answer like you would. That’s how they simulate professional behavior on top of the probabilistic monsters that is behind.
Adding for context that one reason for this is that Lemmy was created by radical (to remain consensual) leftists, and the default instance (also maybe the first big one) they administrate Lemmy.ml (ML stands for Marxist-Leninist) has the same leaning population.
But, so far, afaik, the software itself is still neutral, so you can find instances and communities that fit your needs.
However, this initial leaning is still going to surface from time to time even after spending time blocking the instances and communities you don’t want to see, as users can move around freely.

Technology@lemmy.world•Student Teacher Sent a Private Snapchat Complaining About Her Workday. An Hour Later, Police Pulled Up to Her School.English
51·14 days agoBecoming an elementary schoolteacher does not magically extract you from the culture you have been living in your whole life.
It’s not a mass shooting job, it’s “shooting the student” that made her loose her work, according to the article.
The reason I mentioned comedy TV shows, is that they are a good source of what’s consensual behavior for the time and place where they have been created. Those TV shows have this kind of behavior because they are also a normal behavior in society.
Those shows are mostly American (but I have observed the same in France, Spain, and Japan), so it seems your are an exception there with your intolerance of this common human behavior.

61·14 days agoI am really surprised this shocks you. By curiosity which culture are you from?
I think I can find countless comedy tv show scenes where some character says something like “ugh I am going to kill him” to show frustration, but it’s perfectly obvious it’s just an expression.

6·21 days agoYou don’t need to create an instance (requires server administration skills), just a community (requires a few clicks). On the top right menu, there should be a create community entry.

51·22 days agoI think you are overestimating the capacity and will of advertisers to actually identify people like that. The data may be available for it in theory, but it’s unlikely they built the systems to make it happen because they don’t really have much economical interest to do so. They care about market segments, not individuals.
I had to work a bit on this kind of things. Most of those systems are really shitty and ineffective.

3424·23 days agoI could understand his initial intention of having some kind of nsfw filter for radical opinions, even though the implementation was questionable. And I was honestly sad about the shit storm that hit him. Too many people here pretend to be more respectful and empathetic than average, but will happily dogpile to get a piece of a person given the right momentum.
But this ddos code is hard to defend, it goes against his own initial intention. He should have walked away before reaching this point.
Can we avoid adding new events to this sad chain of events now?
