By “vote for themselves” I meant people voting based on the outcome for them personally. My being a white male allows me a large amount of privilege in this country, and so I choose to use my vote to help others (knowing it doesn’t put us anywhere close to being treated equal overall). So my vote for Harris was to help women, people of color, immigrants, the kids (who are going to have education decimated now and white washed so much more than it already has been), and for trans kids/adults, for everyone in the LGBTQ+ orbit, and on and on. What would benefit me didn’t even play into it, because I’d be fine comparatively (minus the anxiety/depression that Trump causes).

Yeah, my question was kinda rhetorical, but it also seems unreal that so many wanted this. So many thought this was the answer. Just shows how much the Rights disinformation network works, and the Left has no answer for it. They have been building an enormous and well connected media network to spread their lies and hate for years, while the Left fights over not having a unicorn candidate every 4 years.

Going after a population of children that already are struggling with feeling different and trying to navigate a world that is weird and unaccepting of them feels so predatory. Do they plan to go down the line and just keep choosing groups to demonize? Today is trans kids, are we going to go back to punishing lefty kids also?! They both sound insane and cruel and something the government shouldn’t even be worrying about with everything else going on in the world.

And in the pit of my stomach I know that trans kids are just the dog whistle for the christofascists war against anyone nonwhite, and anyone in the orbit of LGBTQ+. Stay safe everyone, the storm is just beginning. =(

I have been Lemmy only since the 3rd party app thing also. I also stopped using Twitter when Musk bought it, and have Mastadon on my to-do list but I’m not sure if I want to spin up my own instance or make an account elsewhere. Other than that I have no other social media accounts and never have.

As for other Fediverse platforms, I’m strongly opposed to the for profit ones, but happy to see all the open source ones.

It seemed that it was a rejection of whatever political group was in power across the globe for the most part this year. This is largely in part because the world as a whole is still healing/recovering from the damage of COVID, and in the US the Dems were left to clean up an economic disaster left by Trump. And we have a large number of people who felt the effects of inflation and for reasons I can’t wrap my head around felt the Dems needed to be voted out. Then we had all the people who wanted to teach the Dems a lesson because of Gaza by making sure Trump was elected to help Israel level the area and make sure there was no future for Palestinians (which is another contradiction I can’t wrap my head around).

So really I think the Dems could have had a unicorn candidate (Bernie) and they still would have lost this election, because enough people only vote for themselves.

Maybe a long shot, but as someone with ADHD and self diagnosed autism, I would encourage you to look into the possibility. I struggled in school all the way through, constantly told “if only you applied yourself”, the problem was I was already working harder and didn’t realize the system wasn’t designed for my brain. Really the world in general isn’t designed for anyone neurodivergent, but your life still has value, you just need help figuring out how the whole unexplained thing works.

I would challenge this thought that we need to wait for the DNC to change before we can stand up to fascism. Everyone left of Trump’s fascist right GOP is essentially lumped together in the same bucket, and there is only one Dem Presidential nominee to represent that enormous amount of people with vastly different feelings and takes on things.

The ability for everyone in a group that large to feel 100% like they are getting everything they want in a candidate is really really small. The one thing that should be something everyone this side of fascism should be able to agree upon is democracy is something we should be looking to preserve no matter what. And we should look to elect candidates down ballot to help move the needle left (or maintain the “norm” or whatever your jam is) and help drive the change we would like to see long term. Waiting for the DNC to just up and change how you want isn’t going to happen without a push from below by the people electing representatives set on making that change.

And seeing a candidate that doesn’t 100% represent all your issues, or your one BIG issue, and sitting out the election (with that effect trickling down ballot) or doing a protest vote just hurts everyone. And now it means we are going to be pulled hard to the right and is going to take an enormous amount of work (years) just to get back to where we were, let alone where we want to be.

Have you learned nothing in the past 9 years? These people have been telling us who they are and what they plan to do, BELIEVE THEM! Giving them the benefit of the doubt or saying they are joking is just allowing them to continue to move the goal posts. We just gave the Presidency to a man that has been telling us he wants Nazi generals, cops to have a “purge day” of American citizens, wants to use the US military and National Guard against citizens and he 100% meant all of it. And we just granted him the power because the media and apologists continue to give these Fascist assholes cover.

Yes, keeping the power is the reason both sides do it. And even if a non partisan group were to approve them, the GOP has been messing with them to suppress minorities and then just dragging their feet in changing them, or changing but in the same bad way and then running out the clock until it’s “too close to the election to change the maps now”. Then if they change afterwards they already got what they wanted, and then just rinse and repeat next time.
