It will sound like a government agency is providing recommendations, but in truth it’s whatever Elon says.

It won’t have government employees or have to follow government rules. It’s just an expensive government contractor with no rules. It won’t have to prove itself. Just “the algorithm” that has the answer to any problem. How did it arrive at that answer? Difficult to say, it’s proprietary. Assuming any accountability, it won’t be uncovered until years after the decision has already been made.

Trump will just take no responsibility. He’ll blame RFK Jr for all the things that go wrong. Maybe he’ll eventually get fired but at that point the damage will already be done. Trump will just say “Ah, he screwed me, I would have done the exact same thing but it would have worked, I’m a smart guy, I’ll fix it or appoint someone else to fix it.” And then it won’t be fixed.

So if RFK Jr. is smart he’ll just do a little bit of damage over time. Alternatively if there is a ton of chaos on day 1, then just add to the chaos. People can only be angry at so many things at one time.

The first two rules basically just mean no one can interact. A version of YouTube could exist within these rules.

So that’s basically the Internet. You can’t visit Rotten Tomatoes for film reviews. Maybe you only show the critics score. But aren’t they also end users? How about a newspaper? Newspaper has an opinion section. How many opinion writers can you have?

This is just great general advice for anything you read or post online. A misinformation tweet on Monday, spreads like wildfire on Tuesday, is looked at by professionals on Wednesday, a reasonable take or correction appears Thursday, and by Friday the only thing anyone remembers is the lie.

Sure, if you have years and election cycles worth of time, that’s a much better solution. If you have 90 days then “big tent” sounds reasonable to me.

The most likely scenario is Trump/Vance are still selected by the Electoral College but on election day Vance is sworn in as President, without a Vice President. Vance then goes through the standard process (Senate approval) to select a Vice President.

Technically it is possible for the Electoral College to select Vance and whomever Vance selects as VP. Since Republicans (will) have control of the Senate the odds of this scenario is slightly increased just to save everyone time. However given the various Electoral College deadlines and the fact that Vance would likely want time to select a VP, this option isn’t likely.

Now if Trump had died 4 weeks before election day and Vance had clearly selected a new VP already, then the second scenario is more likely.

I agree. I think the early complaints about Harris not having a solid platform on her website were fair. On the one hand I think giving her a little bit of a break given the speed she had to put things together would be reasonable. On the other hand we only had a few months until the election and she needed to get on it and get on it FAST. Once it was up I was surprised how little focus it got.

For example take legalizing marijuana. She put out a proposal in mid October with little fanfare and has an Instagram post the day before the election. However in reading the article about a NH woman named Kamala Harris being unsure who to vote for she said, “Kamala supports abortion which I really like. Trump says that he supports weed which I really like.” This may be an anecdotal story but you CANT have people not know your message. Sure she got half the message, but Trump, who hasn’t said shit about marijuana, somehow got to be the marijuana guy?

Now part of this is a result of such a short campaign, but honestly our campaigns are long enough as it is. It’s clear Harris had issues getting her message out there. (And yes, we could blame the uneducated voter, but if you’re the candidate, that’s on you.)

I mean if AOC/Ilhan said they were voting Trump I would pause and listen to the why. If someone does something that unexpected, I would pay attention.

It wouldn’t have got me to change my vote because from a policy standpoint, it just wouldn’t make sense.

However if we look at Bernie Sanders, look at his last minute plea to Democrats. I was already planning to vote for Harris, but if I was on the edge due to Gaza I would have taken his words to heart. He said yes, this sucks, but a vote for Harris is the best option. If he had come out and said the opposite (which wouldn’t have made sense), I would have again paused and taken a moment.

Oh I agree the DNC fucked up, and have fucked up for so many years in a row. My assumption, which was wrong, is that the base was already covered. If we’re reaching out for Republicans it’s because the base is a given.

After seeing what looks like 10 million or so Democrats sit this election out (pending the full results and an investigation of those results) it’s clear Democrats didn’t have the base locked down.

I had no issue with Harris campaigning with Cheney. Cheney and I disagree on 99% of things, but we agreed that Trump is a corrupt piece of shit. Cheney and Kinzinger sacrificed the easy Republican win to go against Trump. As did Romney to a slightly lesser extent.

To me campaigning with Cheney was a way to signal to dissatisfied Trump Republicans that an alternative exists. That your could vote for Harris and still be a capital R Republican.

I’ve met (e.g. was raised by) these people. I thought it was a large part of the voting population.

Clearly I was fucking wrong. Clearly this was a niche. But I understood the strategy. I see people complaining that Harris moved too far to the right but I can’t think of a single right wing policy she picked up. Sure she picked up/was always following neoliberal policy, which aligns with neocon policy, but that was a given. We already had Biden, Harris was an extra step towards progressive, but not a leap. In either case I was happy enough.

Suffice to say I don’t buy the argument that Cheney cost Harris any voters.

Which is sorta the problem with speculation in these threads. We can say “Trump said X”, but really his decisions are based on the number of hamburgers he had that afternoon or which voice whispered in his ear last. We only have wild speculation.

Simply being something isn’t an echo chamber, you have to have a thought or opinion being shared by the group. If every person you interact with only speaks one language, and they all share that one language is the best method of communication, that’s an echo chamber.

Assuming you don’t mean literally “touch grass”, the solution is seeking out opinions/thoughts outside of your echo chamber. That doesn’t necessarily mean forcing yourself to interact with terrible communities, but being aware and understanding (but not agreeing with) them.

Although I again refer to using social media how you like is fine. No one needs to be exposed to certain communities. It’s not wrong or lazy or bad to ignore certain communities or viewpoints, especially toxic ones. However you should be aware that they exist and it can be helpful, if you choose, to understand where they come from.

As a harmless example, if you don’t like brussel sprouts and none of your friends like brussel sprouts, it may benefit you to try brussel sprouts or to seek out and talk to or read about people who like brussel sprouts. You can still at the end of the day dislike brussel sprouts. You don’t have to change your opinion. But now your opinion is more well rounded.

Sure, but my first month of Lemmy was via the web. I still use Mastodon on the web (no app). Whenever I find myself on Reddit (via search) it’s web only. If someone sends me a random YouTube link, I open it in the web. On the off chance someone sends me a random TikTok link, web only.

Again I don’t use any of these apps, but if someone sends me a loops link and it says install the app, I’ll just ignore it.

Honestly that’s great news, but wouldn’t a web version have made wayyyyyyy more sense?

So far, there is only some user settings accessible in the web interface. I don’t have an iPhone, hence I cannot say for their app. The android app will come later, apparently.

I don’t give a shit about TikTok or short form video but legitimately how is this expected to succeed with these limitations? Clearly people like this stuff but can a fediverse service really afford to be iPhone only? This truly seems doomed to fail.

I have lots of shower thoughts, usually it’s what to do next in the D&D campaign I’m running. I could post them, but I don’t think that’s the spirit of the community.
