It’s a pretty commonly utilized tactic that’s especially employed by grifters who want to lend credence to the grift and political operatives who want to… lend credence to their grift. Occasionally though by people who want to gain notoriety in a field they’re new in, keep up a streak of success if they’re not sure about the book’s quality, or do a book tour and have something to sell the talkshows. In all cases it’s employed by people with more money than talent.
I wasn’t questioning whether anyone has ever done this. I was questioning whether they have even a single piece of evidence suggesting that this particular person has done so or if this accusation is purely motivated by simply not liking them which does not justify spreading disinformation.
The source for the claim of booksales in the original article are the same sources who can’t be trusted in mine, so it’s a fair bet that influence peddling at the very least played a part. NYT wheels and deals off popular people who are authors, always has.
I have like 30+ folks blocked. My tolerance for bullshit is too low so I have switched to tagging people with reasons why I might go over the edge and block them.
He’s 2 or 3 more interactions like this away from the block list. Any overt hate speech or dehumanizing shit still gets an instablock. But that ain’t this guy afaik. He’s just a douche with ridiculously unpopular opinions.
And what did I do this time? I asked you to provide evidence for a claim you made. That’s literally all I did. Had such evidence existed you would’ve provided it but you didn’t. I called you out and you got offended by it.
I don’t think I’m the issue here - you just appear to be a hateful person and you don’t even seem to need a reason for it. I mean… look at your modlog - this is what you do.
By sold well do you mean he bought himself a million copies so it could be said that it sold well?
That’s the entire fucking streamer house of cards.
That’s just a normal thing best selling authors do
Yeah the ceo of my company did this to then use the books as swag at tradeshows and meetings
You got any evidence to back that claim up?

A source among many about NYT influence peddling: https://londondaily.com/evtepe-new-york-times-bestseller-list-exposed-fake-editorial-manipulation-not-sales-based-rankings
This other source is more specific to what the other commenter was referring to though: https://factually.co/fact-checks/politics/politicians-political-groups-buying-bulk-books-reports-2f81ef

I’ve added ‘& Mr beast shill’ to your growing list of tags reminding me why I ought to not take anything you say seriously.
You’re one of my least favorite people on Lemmy. Thought you should know. Cheers!

And what are you hoping to achieve by telling me this? I’m genuinely asking.
You can either take the information you get – that people generally don’t like you – to change your behavior or not. That’s all you bud.
Just don’t go screaming to the void about why nobody likes you at any point. People have literally spelled it out for you.
Cheers.
No, you don’t like me.

For what it’s worth, I don’t like you either.
I’m happy to hear that you still think about me.
