AV2 is the next-generation video coding specification from the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). Building on the foundation of AV1, AV2 is engineered to provide superior compression efficiency, enabling high-quality video delivery at significantly lower bitrates. It is optimized for the evolving demands of streaming, broadcasting, and real-time video conferencing.
This specification serves as the definitive technical reference for AV2 implementations. It outlines the bitstream syntax, semantics, and decoding processes required to ensure full conformance.
AV2 provides enhanced support for AR/VR applications, split-screen delivery of multiple programs, improved handling of screen content, and an ability to operate over a wider visual quality range.

i wonder if there is a way to accelerate video decode without the specific hardware.
kind of rough that we need a new gpu for every new codec, on devices that often can’t upgrade them.
A large FPGA could work as a hardware video decoder that is software updatable. Unfortunately they are way to expensive for consumer hardware.
It would be nice if someone would make low cost hardware video decoders on an m.2 module. Then it could be easily upgraded even on a laptop.
Considering how long AV1 adoption has taken, you probably have a decade before you need to worry about needing AV2 support.
i still barely have av1 hardware and it’s not getting any cheaper.
i’d imagine it’d be faster if we didn’t need new hardware support to catch up everytime but oh well if that’s how it is.
