This is what we need to be talking about as a country right now. How do we open up the political binary to include viable third parties? Does that require proportional representation? Does that require a parliamentary system?
I know in NC getting a third party on the ballot requires signatures and a portion of the vote in the previous election. Those bars are too high and risky. What is another path?
Maybe announcing a new party is premature, but at least talking about steps to realistically forming one would be huge. We need a revolutionary overhaul of our 2-party political system, and I posit that most Americans, those that voted and those who didn’t, would agree that 2 bad options is not a real choice.
The binary creates the illusion of choice.
I or another person go once a week. I wish I went every few days, but I love about 20 min away and it’s not my favorite place in the world. For some reason I always make a list even though I buy basically the same things. My partner never uses a list when he goes.
Red peppers, tomatillos, fibrous cereal, milk and soy milk, yogurt/cottage cheese, tortilla chips, a bag of grapefruit when in season, wasa crackers, hummus, eggs / bread / tortillas when low, and whatever I’m making for lunch for the week. Sometimes salad stuff.
I remember reading through the list and thinking “wtf is a ‘clowder,’ hopefully they don’t mean ‘chowder*’”? That’s at least 20 years ago. I’ve never heard “whisper.”
*I have some familiarly with Boston, the land of “chowda,” which is not know to contain cats.
I had a teacher from Spain for three years, then for the next four years they were from various countries: Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and the US. It was great to get used to each accent.
Gosh, do they still do RSS feeds? I so miss that era of the internet.
It’s definitely intended for US audiences. They do long-running features on topics like the war in Gaza, and they touch on important global events like contested elections, but its perspective is rooted in progressive US politics.
My favorite is “Do you speak (language)… Please??”
Edit: I’m misinterpreting on purpose. It was a good list.
I’ll add that if you have all that honey, you might also eat more of it than you’d initially planned and run out sooner. Personally, I would start putting spoonfuls in my tea, using honey instead of jam, maybe experimenting with baking…
Good point in pointing out the discrepancy between music streaming and book borrowing. Online libraries in the US are managed by some kind of digital rights software, which seems to essentially allow libraries to own a limited number of digital copies of a book. Streaming services like Tidal and Spotify seem to pay out a tiny amount of money to artists each time content is streamed. Is it something about library budgeting that doesn’t allow for this? Is it just historical baggage that hasn’t been rethought?
The music streaming model is honestly terrible for musical artists, so I’m not saying that’s necessarily the direction we should head. But you’re right that I’m not limited to listening to a song just because someone else is, and it would be extremely helpful if the same applied to library books.
As it is, when I have time to read I put in the request to borrow a book, and then it becomes available 1 to 10 weeks later (whether or not I’m ready to read it at that point). Then I only get 2-3 weeks to fit reading it into my schedule. It doesn’t work out half the time as I get busy with other things… So how is it not easier to pirate it or buy it? I love and support my library, but golly this digital system is dysfunctional.
They also treat artists like shit. I switched over to Tidal simply to get access to Joanna Newsom’s music, as she won’t tolerate Spotify’s terms. Tidal isn’t much better, but it is slightly.
I was looking forward to blockchain cutting out the middle man in paying artists. Too bad it has so far not happened that way.
I would like to know what rule #6 is. Asking for a friend.
What am I looking at?
I use the Google keyboard at speed and it works great, while the iphone used in the same manner was completely impossible. Even the Google keyboard installed on the iphone was awful.
I’ll try your tip and go slower. Maybe that will make a difference.
Ah that makes perfect sense. I’m alone for much of my day.
It seems to work terribly on iphones, even with Google’s keyboard. (Source: one single iphone which was entirely uncooperative.)
I’ve always swiped but somehow just installed voice to text last week. Game changer!
I’ve had a fresh stevia leaf before, totally amazingly delicious. However i can’t stand it as a sweetener in drinks.
Y’all I’m still loving my Pixel 3A, but I factory reset it years ago and refuse all security updates (because most things work better as is). I know this is a little scary on the security front, but “hell no” to all their shitty updates, Gemini included.
Any idea what I can root to? I’d love to have a secure OS but I have no idea where to start.
