I’m not religious any more at all, but I thought of god as a permeating energy. Energy can become matter and light. Someone smarter than me can explain why that doesn’t make any sense, but that’s what my brain had come up with when I was wrestling with it.

1·2 months agoWith the same system in place I don’t think changing the people involved will make a huge difference. We’ve got to dismantle the whole thing and start from scratch. And with a new system there will naturally be a different type of people interested and involved.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the best way to ease getting back in shape after years of little to no exercise?
1·2 months agoSeconding walking. I had gained 40lbs and eased back into fitness slowly over 2 years. My issue with hiking is the prep time and driving and felt like extra steps. Stepping out the door with a good podcast on was the most accessible for me (recognize that I’m lucky to live in a place with sidewalks and some paths). If the nature part of hiking makes it more interesting to you though and more likely to follow through, go for that!

16·3 months agoSometimes I feel we should be writing these numbers out fully. That’s something worth $4,000,000,000,000 that’s not paying anything substantial to improve your life. If they paid $400M in taxes they’d still be worth about $4T.
As someone with ADHD inattentive… I miss there being an ADD. I’m not hyperactive. Now that I think of it, neither am I inattentive if it’s something I’m interested in. ADD felt like a better descriptor for me, personally.

politics @lemmy.world•A Deal That Would End Universities’ Independence | The free-speech provisions of the so-called compact are an exercise in contradiction.
4·3 months agoThe Atlantic has been putting out some great articles. Worth a read. This is a huge shift in the integrity of American higher learning:
For the entire history of this country, the federal government has allowed colleges and universities to grow and flourish according to their own determination of what higher education means. The resulting system is, for all its flaws, the envy of the world. The smartest people on Earth come to America to live, learn, invent, and prosper, because they know our universities are free. The Trump administration is trying to bring that tradition to an end.
The compact is not a statute passed by Congress or a regulation written with public consent. It is only the ideological will of the president, offered with the logic and ethics of a mafia protection racket. Shakedown artists browbeat and threaten so they can take something that doesn’t belong to them. They also do it to establish who has power and who should live in fear. Universities that accept this bargain will be selling their souls for nothing but a promise of safety that will surely be broken in turn.

Since the beginning of February, at least 61 Afghans, including nine women, have been flogged in sports stadiums packed with ordinary citizens and Taliban officials from the judiciary and administration, according to data from the top court. The individuals were accused of adultery, eloping, sodomy and robbery, with many of them also receiving prison sentences ranging from several months to six years.
