Long term computer programmer, making my own library. American based. Far left politically. Politics centered around promoting use of paper ballots. Follows news about environmental collapse, political corruption in my country, human rights, science and tech.

I think it’s good to be humbled
I’m not sure of what I’m talking about exactly, but I vaguely suspect that integrating with the fediverse will make some of their less ethical practices at tumbler too transparent and obvious.
But that is one part hunch and one part cynical belief, I don’t know of the details
Every region in the world has its way of doing things. When new layers of control are added, it makes some people nervous.
When the new controls are perhaps mismanaged and corrupt, promising to do more than advertised, it makes some people angry. Especially during an increase of lawlessness and corruption of the central government. Especially when it uses the same messaging which has already harmed many
I sorta on OP’s side; he said a sentence that could be interpreted hundreds of ways, and everyone assumed the worse and started attacking his character. And it’s very hard to nicely restate one’s position without some mild anger after that.
Then people attack even more. It’s a feeding frenzy.
I unblocked this community just this week; I even commented here. But this entire thing is just too much. I’m blocking politics again , and hopefully world politics changes for the better when test it out in a few months
The current administration is using chaos for wealth and power. But many see chaos as a necessary step to rescue the country from the grip of whatever the USA is and has become more of.
The very definition of chaos means nobody can control it. It rattles around and produces outcomes which surprise many, it wrecks things many depend. And never builds what people need
I think that is all too frequent throughout the entire fediverse; just the topics change.
I have blocked entire popular communities on many servers to not get caught up in that.
There are some topics I just have to type a few keystrokes and I manage to attract controversy. And I do not understand why. What’s the big deal? Why do people hate me? And some instances are just weird to me, but others love it and find them important. Some instances are more in touch with my own weirdness.
I think if I have learned anything by my adventures, is not to demonize any instance used by a large group of people, but recognize there are different types of oddballs lurking there, waiting …
Hexbear has thousands of users who have written 5 million comments; some are crazy.
Personally I can deal with hexbear crazy better than I can deal with some crazy in other communities, but everyone is different
I’m not a bellicose type, or a lib, and I’m not an imperialist, so I’m a decent fit with most communities there.
It’s far easier for me to ignore most oddball stuff in those two than things that drive me crazy here.
The one I’m on is anarchist , and is rather chill. There are actually many small servers that are left, but not authoritarian.
If you like larger, I think the reputations of ml and hexbear here on world are not realistic. More of a scary bedtime story libs tell their kids. But there are a few users there who drift into what you might not like.
I’m going to write my senators and hold up a sign, with a polite yet firm wording, in a very peaceful protest
You create an account in another and import your account info, keeps a lot of stuff
There is a popular feeling of support in Iran right now, a rally around the flag that even many of the women who were protesting against the government are supporting.
Locking down the internet to suppress protests, or to suppress news, is not what is happening. Indeed the more damage that is shown the more patriotic Iranians become.

It is rather both sides, isn’t it?
But, after poking around lemmy, I have decided there is value in all instances. There will be communities nestled in between the stuff I do not like. I like and dislike much on lemmy

looking for a instance with the fewest trolls, bots, and anyone that likes to take things to the extremes.
All the instances are good in their own way, but at least one will irritate you very much, and it’s always different. There are ways each one can make you go “why???”
There are commenters who will call one or more instances bad things. That may or may not be accurate for you.
Each large instance has one or more crazy mods, all instances mostly have decent mods. Each instance will have multiple examples about why it’s good or horrible.
0 is very overrated
The numbers only count if it’s constantly repeated, otherwise it’s just a sort of a national holiday.
“Here in the USA, we are so progressive that we actually protest 4 times a year”
After decades of warnings warped by opportunistic politics, it is hard these days to take this seriously.
There will probably be one or two small incidents, covered by the press, especially if the perpetrator is not Christian or is not white. Police departments will use this as an excuse to spend more money.
But any mass shooting that causes so many more casualties, in the next week or two, will have a small mention only and be forgotten.
