81·13 days agoBetween the smorgasbord of propaganda and ratings slop, withered attention spans and critical thinking skills, temporarily embarrassed millionaires and gilded age inequality, and folks that just can’t face how bad things really are, yea we are pretty fucked I guess. I don’t think the US is alone in that regard, but indeed beacon on a hill for a humanity in peril. OH my god did I just quote fucking Reagan?!

57·14 days agoOn WABC (AM 770 in my area) they literally tried to put a negative spin on this! Apparently, since he’s already a millionaire, he doesn’t need it! Evil guy! They even played the clip of him talking about going door to door and no one told him they’re concerned the mayor doesn’t make enough. Beyond fucking delusional. I turn that shit on when I’m looking for maximum and immediate cognitive dissonance.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds tells AI haters to fork off: Linux supremo says contributors opposed to AI use can 'just walk away'English
6·16 days agoI understand and appreciate where you desire to go with it, I just don’t see a current system to support it. Afaik people do make their own AIs/LLMs (recalling an artist’s court case regarding the legitimacy of their work), but large scale LLMs do their thing by running roughshod and stealing tons of data and driving up hardware and electricity prices. It is difficult to see an environment where small models prosper compared their lawless corpo counterparts. It would probably be more beneficial to humankind, though.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds tells AI haters to fork off: Linux supremo says contributors opposed to AI use can 'just walk away'English
52·16 days agoWell all I will say is that I do understand the usefulness of LLMs as tools, though I only really use them passively through search results, and always verify the results separately. And I have a fundamental understanding of how they work. While I understand what Linus is getting at in a practical sense, I worry he is putting his head in the sand regarding the heavy handed agendas at work in the implementation of AI as we know it now. And I think that is a definite bad thing to be ignorant of. I personally won’t embrace “AI” until it is liberated from the agenda of power and inequality. Though, I cannot but accept its level of influence in daily life, and will attempt to understand and recognize if it fundamentally evolves or changes.
Edit: “they’re just new and selfish people will try to find an angle with them, same as it’s always been.” Just wanted to add that yeah, its pretty highly focused in that way. And until society can fundamentally change, that is and always will be a huge problem applying such technologies. I mean shit, look at the fuckin internet.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds tells AI haters to fork off: Linux supremo says contributors opposed to AI use can 'just walk away'English
2712·16 days agoWell most of them won’t read beyond the headline; they’ll likely just make massive assumptions based on title and their own predispositions. Sounds to me like Linus is trying to leave room for some of the practical nature of LLMs and implement them as useful tools, but it seems like he may be a little ignorant of the various agendas of LLM developers themselves. Just my stupid take.

2915·2 months agoBlowing with the wind, is he? Someone inform me if this isn’t just pure posturing for voters.
Edit: Holy crap! What an interesting split on this comment. Look people, all I was trying to do was glean more info on what type of billionaire behavior this guy’s been exhibiting, and perhaps have a measured discussion on the subject. Truth be told, no billionaire or person of such excessive means can be trusted until separated from such wealth and means, and certainly all high profile politicians say the favorable thing and then do something else. I’d rather folks share what they know etc even just to approximate where this guy is on that scale; it’s interesting (and somewhat disappointing) that the middle ground I imagined (ie: has done some good, still don’t trust him) just really not represented here. I just don’t know where the bar is anymore. I do know that getting vitriolic and irrational, or conversely strongly supporting establishment types is ultimately distracting and a useful tool to those in power.

1·2 months agoAgain it is literally not what you are continually stating in your comments: “editorializing the title” and even then I clearly posted the title and my particular bullshit afterwards. Rewrite the rule more carefully, or continue having this argument almost every single day with various parties (seems a common occurrence from my passive observation). Need not discuss it more; I’ve already altered my post to appease you. Just wish you’d understand your obvious and blatant error (and so do others).
