I don’t write as frequently as I used to, but in case you’re interested in multimedia & data compression:

Technology@lemmy.world•M4 Mac Mini Power Button Has New Bottom LocationEnglish
2·1 year agoI should have clarified that I was referring to “Restart” rather than “Shut Down” because I’m not aware of how frequently people actually “Shut Down” their devices. My intention was to ask: How often would you need to physically press the power button when the functionality of turning the device on and off is accessible through software?
On another note, I think the amount of attention posts like this get is a pretty clear indication of how deep Apple hate truly runs. I’m fine with Apple, more of a Linux person myself, but stuff like this makes me shrug my shoulders. Only Apple could garner this much attention for putting the power button in a weird spot on a tiny desktop that nobody complaining about it would buy even if it was on top of the device.

72·1 year agoUnless your computer has issues, can’t you just power off from within macOS?
JPEG XL support in Waterfox is nice.

Technology@lemmy.world•iPhone 16 is here, but I’m hyped for just one reason: RCS on iOS 18English
151·1 year agoThe fact that iPhones are getting this before Android phones without Google Play Services tells you all you need to know about the nature of RCS. Android has lost all of its intrigue and fun in favor of becoming GoogleOS

12·1 year agoRoyalty-free blanket patent licensing is compatible with Free Software and should be considered the same as being unpatented. Even if it’s conditioned on a grant of reciprocality. It’s only when patent holders start demanding money (or worse, withholding licenses altogether) that it becomes a problem

1·1 year agoJPEG-XL is in no way patent encumbered. Neither is AVIF. I don’t know what you’re talking about

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•iPhone users, what's stopping you from switching to Android?English
192·2 years agoAs an Android user, I’m considering switching to iPhone due to how much worse the Android experience is becoming without Google Play Services. I’m using a custom ROM with microG, which potentially means no RCS since it is only available through Google Messages which doesn’t work with microG.
As much as it would suck jumping ship, at the very least, Apple is still a consumer hardware company first & foremost while Google will always be an ads company. Android exists to that end & that end alone.
Throughout the entire OS. Image CDNs are adopting JXL on some scale - Cloudinary reportedly ships billions of JXL images regularly
I have customized ZSH to be very similar to Fish

1·2 years agoI think the wave of hype sort of overshadowed a couple of key points about these chips:
- Performance & efficiency aren’t leaps & bounds ahead of the Intel & AMD crowd
- ARM Windows laptops are still Windows laptops
Battery life is hardware and software.

Linux@lemmy.ml•text clarity on windows is so good, can I get the same on linux?English
5·2 years agoI’m partial to macOS and I agree, I think Windows font rendering looks like garbage. On GNOME, I’ve found things to be okay. Sucks that patents are involved in this mess

Some people graduate in 3 years, some in 4, some in 5+. It really is different for everyone. Unless it is exceedingly financially difficult to afford these two additional classes, you’ll probably be okay.
