Is it actually federating yet?

Meanwhile I sit in my backyard right now that is so overgrown I can barely see my large dog… I should probably be shot too. They brought a tank to a code enforcement situation.

“What I can tell, however, is that hating on the tech itself distracts people from blaming those actually responsible, the humans doing the enshittification. The billionaires, dictators…”

That’s something I’ve been trying to convince people of that I converse with about LLMs and similar generative technology. I’ve met so many people that just throw a big blanket of hate right over the entire concept of the technology and I just find it so bizarre. Criticize the people and corporations using the tech irresponsibly! It’s like a mass redirection of what and who is really to blame. Which I think is partially because “AI” is something that sort of anthropomorphizes itself to a large portion of society and most people think the “personality within” the technology is responsible for the perceived misdeeds.
I figure when all is said and done and historians and researchers look back on this time, there will be a lot to learn about human behavior that we likely have little grasp of at the moment.
Jonathan@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Meta whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams says company targeted teens with advertisements based on their ‘emotional state’English22·5 个月前It is absolutely baffling that people don’t realize that people are the product. I’ve had some folks tell me that they understand and “don’t care” because the service is “free” or whatever, but then they get angry and freaked out when the platform knows exactly what they’re thinking, or at least seems to know.
There’s definitely a deficit in understanding and education on what corporate social media really does.
I had forgotten about doing that myself. I did that on a couple servers once the distros had full 64 bit builds. Does that technically count as an architecture swap in-place as well?
“Medium: Same as easy but go from the derivative to the base.”
I can’t quite recall, but I think I did exactly that with Ubuntu -> Debian once upon a time. I think Ubuntu was only a year or so old though, so there wasn’t a huge amount of divergence back then. As a bonus anecdote I also attempted a semi-successful build of Gentoo on a PPC Mac around the same time (nothing before or after that has compared in its level of nightmare).

Jonathan@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Diplomacy dies on live TV as Trump and Vance gang up to bully Ukraine leaderEnglish1·7 个月前I just wonder what type of people saw that and thought Zelenskyy was the unreasonable one? It’s rhetorical, I know what type of people think that… sadly.
Jonathan@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Diplomacy dies on live TV as Trump and Vance gang up to bully Ukraine leaderEnglish104·7 个月前I just can’t understand why Vance would interpret Zelenskyy as being disrespectful for politely, calmly, and carefully articulating his point of view on how diplomacy has failed him and his country. Vance seems like the type of person I would basically laugh at and walk away from if I were in a situation to have to hear him be “alpha and in-charge”.
It was like watching a scene from an episode of a reality TV show from the early 2000s.
Jonathan@lemmy.worldto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Algorithms are breaking how we think | Technology ConnectionsEnglish46·7 个月前Great video, thanks for posting! This guy articulated a lot of thoughts about algorithmic recommendations that I’ve never been quite able to form into coherent thoughts myself. I definitely understand why I decided to go all in with the fediverse or social web half a decade ago or so now.
That’s how I do it too, but after reading your “hand in the blob” comment, perhaps I’ll start wearing gloves.
Jonathan@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I want more federation! Federated browsers? Federated github? Federated hosting providers? Federated internet? Where are them?1·8 个月前But that’s true of any network connected messaging protocol, making sure a message is delivered could be implemented client side. The issue with AP objects not making it to other clients / servers is more about federation discovery.
Jonathan@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I want more federation! Federated browsers? Federated github? Federated hosting providers? Federated internet? Where are them?4·8 个月前I know how that is! Seems like I’m constantly wondering if I just made this or that up. 🤷🏻♂️
Jonathan@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I want more federation! Federated browsers? Federated github? Federated hosting providers? Federated internet? Where are them?6·8 个月前The developer of Pixelfed - an Instagram-alike (and now Loops.video - a TikTok like platform) announced that he is working on an ActivityPub messaging service called “Sup.” There’s nothing else really known about it except that he’s developing it. AP would actually work fairly well as a messaging protocol aside from the lack of end-to-end encryption, but that too is being worked on.

Jonathan@lemmy.worldto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Announcing FediMeteo – Weather in the Fediverse!English2·9 个月前That’s a really cool use for snac! It’s perfect for something so straightforward and uses so little resources that I would imagine if you eventually have the entire planets weather forecasts being published it would still only use a tiny amount of bandwidth and power!
I always struggled with that word too, but remembering it like that will probably fix that issue for me. I don’t really have many opportunities to use the word “medieval” though.
