Hype and FOMO are the main drivers of the Silicon Valley economy! I hate it here.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Commercials seem to be normalizing an unhealthy work-life balance more.
78·3 months agoThere was one cellphone company advertising WFH, as work from highway. I vomited in my mouth a little to think that companies would absolutely try and make my commute more “productive” rather than let me work from home.

202·5 months agoBro, we haven’t even started the primaries, isn’t this the exact time to ask for better? The anti-trans thing is only part of it. He’s also a capitalist shit heel who rubber stamps PG&E’s agenda with 0 push back. Is extremely anti-homeless. Doesn’t do the bare fucking minimum to push back against police brutality in LA. But yeah I should just forgive that before the primaries even start because his team did something witty on twitter.

Question, have either of you lived in a rural area before? I am originally from LA and it’s hard to describe how jarring it is to move to a rural area. There is no “quick trip to the store” when the closest one is an hour away. Also I never got used to how limited the selection was once I got out of a big area. You’re right to be concerned about emergencies, the closest dr will probably be a considerable drive away. The internet makes the world feel smaller, but rural areas don’t tend to have faster internet so you might not be able to do things like remote dr visits to compensate for the distance. My in-laws complain constantly about their septic tank, and they cannot use their well water for drinking. It’s a huge lifestyle change and you’re right for being hesitant.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there some special process by which musicians/producers arrive at an agreed-upon tempo for a song recording?
2·11 months agoI honestly can’t say with 100% certainty but I can speak to my experience with playing in an ensemble. For small sets, think a duet like violin and piano, usually there is an agreed upon “lead” and the other player(s) match them. In larger ensembles, band or orchestra, the conductor is god so we should be following them for tempo and queues. That being said, we listen to each other for certain queues and phrases to know when to join in. Generally we match whatever percussion or bass is doing, because that’s usually where time is kept.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•if you wear pantyhose, doesn't it hurt your belly? where do I buy low rise pantyhose?
15·1 year agoHigh rise pantyhose tend to be very comfortable as long as it isn’t too hot. They’re nice because they don’t slide down. Most have some extra elastic that helps keep your belly looking smoother and flatter, as well as keeping the lines from showing.
My issue with low rise is that if it’s not up to your waist there’s a higher risk of them sliding down. It’s super uncomfortable when you’re walking and the crotch of your pantyhose is now halfway down your thigh. There’s no good way to fix it either without going to the bathroom to adjust. Slipping does depend quite a bit on your build, the pantyhose size and type, and the brand, so trial and error will find you the best ones.
Best of luck finding good hose!

politics @lemmy.world•‘Tampon Tim’ Walz Is a Weird Meme Behind a Real Problem | Many girls can’t afford menstrual products. And too many Republicans are committed to keeping it that way.
25·1 year agoWhat a thoughtful thing to do. I am actually 1000% on board with having menstrual supplies in the men’s room, even knowing that probably a good percentage of them will be used by boys just messing around. I went to college with young men that acted like I kicked a puppy when I mentioned menstruation. Whole grown men who could not stomach even a mention something so common that it happens to half the population once a month. I firmly believe that having those supplies available to them will not just help the people who need them. It will also make them better parents and partners because they will actually have some basic understanding of what is involved in menstruation and how to help someone in need.

16·1 year agoThat’s only the half of it. He got into politics as a gun control advocate after his wife, a house representative, was fucking shot in the head at a political out reach event! He somehow won his senate seat in gun loving AZ! It’s wild.
There’s a reason why they’re my former employer. Upper management was discussing replacing our badges with the phone. We needed the phones to get into the building because that was where the covid protocol pass was kept and security checked. It was impressive how quickly they took advantage of the pandemic to make creepy breeches in privacy.
Preach. It wasn’t body cams but our company gave us all mandatory phones with custom location tracking software on them. It was done as part of their pandemic response. The phones were supposedly only tracking your location within a mile of the site and were only used for enforcing social distancing and infection tracking. Well when the return to office mandates came around, upper management was suddenly too informed about how much time we spent onsite. They swore up and down it wasn’t the phones and went to pretty absurd lengths to find some other metric to prove it.
Avenue 5 is a brilliant dark sci-fi comedy that I cannot stop thinking about. It’s basically a cruise ship in space but then things go wrong. The physics are actually sound which makes for some really fun and terrifying gags. It’s heavy on dark humor, but if you’re ok with that it’s such a fun ride. I am biased but I feel like this show is criminally underrated.

30·2 years agoThat and more. They have a mandate for nuclear nonproliferation, but it’s more accurate to think of them as America’s R&D lab. The National Labs are fucking incredible! They are so much more than the DoD’s innovation lab. They do a ton of research that isn’t possible for the private sector. They also own and make available equipment that is difficult for individuals to maintain for example: Fermilabs has a particular accelerator, Sandia has the Z machine and a MEMS foundry, and Oak Ridge has one of the most powerful supercomputers and several labs focusing on neutron and nuclear power. Fuck just look up the patents and Nobel Prizes for Lawrence Livermore, Argonne, and Los Alamos. Yes there is a ton of nuclear but they cover so much more. They’re amazing and a national treasure!
