Technology@lemmy.world•Happy 45th birthday, Xerox Star, the computer that brought us a full GUI well before Apple and MicrosoftEnglish
29·20 days agoXerox made a bunch of bad business decisions that caused a household name to disappear.
Xerox invented the GUI, mouse, and Ethernet. But basically because sales didn’t immediately do well they killed revolutionary innovations and let IBM, Apple, and Microsoft benefit from their work.
My only gripe is you can’t view what’s in the starter packs without subscribing to them. But yeah I love seeing that feature, definitely helps new users get started with Lemmy/Piefed.

321·1 month agoYou can’t just deny due process because 1; that sets legal precedence, and 2: it opens it up to people claiming wrong doing. There’s a literal mountain of evidence of their crimes, you’ve got to bring it all out publicly like they did in the Nuremberg Trials.

2932·2 months agoAsked for comment, a Discord spokesperson told Ars that the platform “takes situations like this seriously, especially when they involve teens and account security.”
More like Discord only takes these things seriously when an article drags them. Probably only banned the kids account because she dropped this on them and they handled it badly.
Crazy how far this company has fallen, but that’s expected I guess when $$$ are on the line.

59·2 months agoNoem … put plans in place to purchase (an empty warehouse) in Salt Lake City, Utah, for $145.4 million in order to help ramp up detentions…
…the large warehouse was valued by tax assessors in 2025 at $97 million, meaning Noem and DHS paid nearly 50 percent more than the property was worth…
The deal … was finalized on March 11, six days after Trump fired Noem as Homeland Security secretary, but before she officially left DHS on March 31.
…a report from commercial real estate firm CoStar found that ICE had overpaid by an average of 11 to 13 percent above market value for the other 10 properties.
The overpriced warehouse purchase in Utah and other states is now part of an internal DHS investigation into acquisitions and contracts made by Noem and Corey Lewandowski, the top Trump ally with whom Noem has long been rumored to be having an affair.
I want to know who’s profiting off these real estate sales. Wanna bet Noem has her own grift running with the guy she’s cheating with?
