The man is still in debilitating pain. Suffering through a long trial with all the pomp and circumstances surrounding it would have just been agony I think. Plus, now they can get the state charges dismissed on double Jeopardy so he doesn’t have to deal with that. And by pleading guilty he denies the, now completely right wing owned mass media, the circus they were so hoping to be able to monetize.
The problem is that these doctors might not even know that the AI’s are spying on them. We don’t have enough legislative protection for our private data so they could sign up for these things and be under the impression that their data is secure meanwhile these AI companies are siphoning that data into their training models without telling them. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before.
That is one of the legitimate uses. Unfortunately it’s marred by the AI companies’ complete lack of trustworthiness when it comes to data privacy and security. You can’t know for certain they aren’t just wrapping your personal medical notes into their ever growing store of training data.
That’s pretty much what is driving the entire AI “boom”. It’s the Amazon effect.
Amazon, and Netflix to a certain extent as well as a number of other early internet startups, lost money for around 10 years before they started making shit tons. And everybody wants to be on that particular ride. So they are queueing up in every AI line they can find to hedge their bets on one of them being the one that survives and thrives. It doesn’t really occur to any of them that all of them could fail. Because “AI is the future”. Except there is no plan to monetize any of them. And so far every time one of them introduces a charge, people stop using it.

I don’t think you understand how much it is that jurors are not allowed to know about jury nullification. If it’s found out that they bring it up in the jury deliberations, or mention or even allude to it during the trial, they can be kicked off the jury immediately.
They basically shifted all the research that they were doing through alpha fold to Isomorphic Labs.
Edit: there’s a case to be made for the idea that they may have wanted to lower the public profile of the work they are doing in order to monetize it. Alpha fold was a non-profit endeavor, and switching it over to isomorphic labs may give them the opportunity to sell their research as a product instead of giving it away for free.

Exactly. Their problem is becoming the fact that there is now at least 2 entire generations of people who have no idea what the “red scare” was. They have grown up knowing Russia as a capitalist country and now that capitalist country is the one that has attacked Ukraine with an eye for conquest. The modern red scare has become capitalists, or more precisely oligarchs like Putin and Trump/Bezos/Musk/et all.
Will the succeed in their agenda? Probably not, you have to flip actual Republican seats to do so. But dammit they’re gonna try.
I find this attitude defeatist. A not insignificant number of people who perennially vote for Republicans are in favor of a lot of Democratic socialist ideas. The problem to surmount is the decades of propaganda making the word socialism somehow demonic and evil. There is also the unholy marriage of the Christian church and republicans. Glued mostly together by the continual fight over abortion.

There is in fact a current case in the UK, which is the legal system that the US has based itself on, in regards to a lawyer insinuating jury nullification during their closing remarks. The lawyer is being held in contempt and is now awaiting their own trial for that.
