politics @lemmy.world•Gen Z men are moving away from MAGA in droves, polls show
2·10 days agoSure, but at least reminding people of why at the time leadership announces a change removes a lot of ambiguity.
Definitely doesn’t solve the problem by itself, but it’s not much work to include… Presuming the law/change in question was written with a real reason in mind.

14·10 days agoThis was always true. I want someone who works for the working man and woman. I don’t care if we become socialist, stay in capitalism, what the fuck ever other choice: we as people need to feel taken care of. Any system that ignores its people is doomed.
Just as important is explaining to people why some choices need to be made that we may not agree with. Raising the gas tax? I’m ok with it, because I already know it’s how we pay for our roads. But what about my less aware neighbor? If they simply see the rate jump, and don’t know why, it leaves the door wide open for a conspiracy schmuck to step in with a ragebait explanation.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Older people (30+) online, what would you advise younger generations in regards to life?
2·1 month agoLife is a best effort. Make sure the people whose back your scratching are returning the favor.
Don’t get caught holding the bag, in fact don’t even hold the bag.
Finally, if you like weird fashion, just go for it. Shiny black clothes can look great on you if that’s what you actually like.

politics @lemmy.world•Full list of degrees not classed as ‘professional’ by Trump admin
5·2 months agoUsing the same wiki you’ve linked, notice the word “accreditation” as key to the concept of a professional degree, with which you’ll then note all engineers who graduate in the US must be. Yes, all. ABET is our accreditation body. Thus, we are professional by your own definition.
Beyond that, one can also be licensed, but that is already in addition to already being an accredited professional by way of at least an accredited baccalaureate.
Finally, I’m going to be a little rude here, this example of useless pedantry is particularly why I left academia with prejudice. It’s been nice educating you on these unimportant minutea, take care.

6·2 months agoI still think all engineering is professional, as is nursing etc. Electronic, mechanical, computer, all of em.
Look man, just go by the agreed-upon definition of the word: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/professional

Even if your other points were valid, this has direct impact on people’s income for years after they graduate.
I’ll go further and point out that in general, we need art as well as science, not one vs the other.
E: No dude, look at how the word is defined: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/professional, licensed or not, engineering or any degree requiring training is professional.

30·2 months agoIt has also been reported that engineering, a business master’s, counseling or therapy, and speech pathology will not be considered “professional” either.
Engineering is not professional? What a laughable sack of shit. We’re going to have a lot of work ahead to undo this damage.
I look forward to improving our systems better than they’d previously been when trump and project 2025 showed up.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What questions do teens (14-18yo) have about choosing a career path, or navigating school and education options?
2·2 months agoGet experience in weird and uncommon areas of electrical engineering. The greybeard technicians, the almost bland engineer who gets put in charge of a critical project… there’s a lot of actual art to our techniques, hidden to all but those in the know. AI will never reveal these secrets as working with those guys and gals directly will.
Build projects, make a portfolio like a graphic designer might, talk is cheap but seeing is believing. Talk about your mistakes almost as much as successes, bit keep everything succinct.

I just want to engineer green energy stuff and help people keep their lights on without destroying earth in the process, like I never signed up for any of this shit and I’m not ok with any of it.
I want to destroy this admins legs so we can take a breath and have a talk amongst ourselves, this shit is getting wildly out of hand.
