Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
1·9 days agoIs it possible there are less businesses doing it because many companies have already done it? I know a lot of people aren’t in favour of self-checkouts, but decisions go to where the money and convenience are. We don’t go to tellers or the few gas stations that serve because of convenience. We troubleshot our computers and do our own renovations because hiring workers would be too expensive. If you don’t like self-checkouts, don’t use them. It’s as easy as that.

7·10 days agoWhat country is this? They seem to becoming more prevalent here. (Canada) My observation is that people generally look at the cashier lines. If there’s too long a wait, they head for the self-checkout. Or, if they only have a few items, they head to the self-checkout.

41·26 days agoIt’s Australia. They have “rare” shark attacks too so maybe the word has some leeway.
I’m still trying to figure out why “how come” means “why.”
You can find people like that on Hellotalk (although that seems to become a bit of a pickup place lately) or there’s a website called conversationexchange.com. Alternately, you can ask chatgpt to have a conversation with you and set how difficult you want the language.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Driving when you're old must be wonderful. They can't hear when people honk and can't see their finger. They must smile and imagine the frustration of all those impatient drivers.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The word "expert" is used frequently in news headlines, but its meaning is notoriously vague.
6·6 months agoYes. I have a strong opinion on the subject and have shared it extensively among my close friends.
It’s too bad we can’t get animals (including ourselves) to hold it all day then dispense it into a fuel tank for home use.
My problem is with the word soup. Scientists don’t call today’s ocean a soup and it has many times more compounds, materials, and living matter.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the most confusing misnomer you've seen?
153·6 months agoPrimodial soup. It was perfectly sterile. No organic matter in it. (didn’t exist yet.) Today’s oceans are wet cement in comparison.

Nothing under mine. There’s a place where I can input that kind of information, but everything is empty. Maybe this is unique to US America?
