I’m nice because it makes me feel good. That’s the only reward I need.

811·2 days agoI searched, and what I found was that Ilhan Omar had recieved donations from someone running a fraud company. Those donations were then either returned or donated to another cause. I’m not seeing any reputable news sources making any claims about her involvement.

19·3 days agoHow do you ban future laws? Isn’t that a bit like when a 10 year old tells his girlfriend she isn’t allowed to ever ever break up?

39·5 days agoAt no point did I say anything about “may as well vote GOP”. Just because both parties are insanely corrupt, doesn’t mean the GOP isn’t pure evil, while the democratic party is “just” greedy corrupt pieces of shit. The democratic party is still 10x better, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are bought just as much as the GOP.

317·5 days agoThe thing is though, he’s not any more corrupt than your average politician, he just doesn’t care enough to try to hide it. He knows no one will do anything, because then they’ll be the next head on the chopping block, so why waste the effort?

2·7 days agoDo you know that since Reagan, the Democrats have never restored or brought back a single social safety net or benefit we lost from the Republicans?
Why would they? I’m sure it was very expensive for their owners to rip away those safety nets.

Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
2·7 days agoIt’s been a thing here for a few years. You scan the barcode with your phone, put it in your bag, net, suitcase, whatever, and then just scan a qr code on your way out and pay with whatever payment you want. I started using it while waiting in line at a checkout, and managed to set up the app, verify my age, set up payment option, scan everything, and pack it, before the 3 people in front of me were done.

Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
5·7 days agoI quite like self checkout, because I am quite a bit faster at scanning my own stuff, than the old as shit people in front of me, who need to find exact cash, and need to read the entire receipt before moving, so they can complain to the cashier that they paid €0,1 too much for their carrots. Even better is mobile checkout though, so I can just scan whatever I need on my way through the shop and pay while walking out.
I could see this helping construction workers take part of the load off of their bones. I’ve seen so many people with fucked up bodies, from running up and down roofs with heavy equipment and materials. Something like this would be great.
It wouldn’t really even need a massive battery. You could easily fit a bunch of batteries in the work van, and just swap them hourly or whatever.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t fight for privacy, I’m saying for all practical purposes, we’ve already lost the fight. That’s not a reason to not keep trying though.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If ghosts were real every restaurant would be haunted as fuck
38·12 days agoThat’s my big gripe with american ghost hunting series, they have no perspective. “This house is almost 100 YEARS old, someone actually died here, so now it’s HAUNTED!!!”, and I’m here in a european farmhouse from the 1700s like, “so shouldn’t I be hearing all this same bullshit?”

2·14 days agoOh come on now, it isn’t all bad! We tried self policing for farmers here in Denmark, and now our oceans are dead, because of a practically unregulated amount of fertilizer being dumped in our streams and rivers. But boy oh boy did the farmers profit! Not through cost cutting though, through government subsidies.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump ads paid for by US government allegedly violate anti-propaganda laws
41·14 days agoI’m sure the democratic politician will send a very stern letter. Or maybe even sit silently with a sign saying “I don’t like what he is doing”.
I mean, what more could you possibly expect anyone to do in the face of fascism?

I mean, obviously americans should do everything in their power to vote this away, but even if they’re successful in this election, it doesn’t end there. An undemocratic ideology doesn’t stop, just because they lost the democratic way. They don’t respect the rules, and want to destroy the system, so they’re not going to accept the outcome of the system, and they’re definately not going to change because of it. It’s a very very deep sickness in USA, that is rooted deep in the culture, so it will take a hell of a long time, effort, and lives to get it out.
