If you’re just worried about the possibility of shortages and not being able to get food easily then stock up on things that will last a long time in the freezer, is something that you will regularly use regardless, and won’t break you to buy in bulk.

Even with some of the prices already going up a little bit chicken is a good example, you can go by huge packs of it at Costco for a reasonable price still at the moment and other similar stores, vegetables like broccoli florets tend to hold up decently in the freezer for a little while (4-6months) and there multiple types of bread that deal well with being frozen and then later thawed out if you use bread a lot.

Basically instead of trying to hyper optimize like some type of prepper just look at what you generally go through, evaluate what out of that is something that will last in a freezer for a good amount of time, and then bulk up on it and just continue using your food like you normally would. Worst case scenario you saved tiny bit of money by buying in bulk which usually comes with a slight savings. Best case scenario shortly after your bulk buying price is Skyrocket and you can try and ride it out off of your supplies.

Avoid the toilet paper problem by getting a bidet, I spent money on the nice $300 one it has heated water which I like and now a single pack of toilet paper from Costco is like almost a Year’s worth of toilet paper because I only use it to help dry a little faster than the weird but hair dryer does so i use almost nothing

It’s not just you, there’s been a lot of threads on let me talking about it but the problem with Mastodon is the fact that there is no content recommendation algorithm. You basically just get shown stuff from your local instance and maybe stuff it’s Federated with. Which is pretty much guaranteed to be a bunch of useless garbage nobody is interested in and random cat pictures.

Bluesky is not perfect, but it’s better than X and i can actually find content i want. I’ve tried so many times to Mastodon and it’s just not worth it. Finding content is a huge effort and i don’t want to put that effort in.

Blue Sky learned very quickly that I’m interested in artists content and now when I open it I find at least one new artist to follow each day so I can just open it scroll through the people I’m following look at the Discover tab to find a new one whose art I like and feel better that’s just not going to happen on Mastodon

I don’t even see a child character? I feel like I’m missing something here but I went and checked the ffmpeg documentation because they are using Anubis and it appears to just be a generic chibi Style character that looks to be maybe early twenties style adult.

Do you just assume that any cartoon character is underaged? There’s literally no indication that that character is in any way underaged whatsoever, it appears to be a standard chibi-style depiction of a generic adult.

I think you may need to consult a therapist or other mental health professional if literally every depiction of a cartoon character in a Chibi art style causes you to see pedophilia

I’m not sure you understand how a suggestion algorithm works, it’s not something that can be run locally without having to then load and process thousands of messages. There is no aspect of that that could be run locally while simultaneously not having to load all the messages you’re attempting to sort and make recommendations on.

It is not at all equivalent to a word filter, a word filter is not attempting to find something, it’s a filter that applies to things that are already being loaded regardless. When a post comes in the word filter looks to see whether or not it has a word that needs to be filtered. An algorithm needs to find new content out of all the content available and then attempt to determine whether or not it’s something that should recommend meaning the client would have to load thousands upon thousands of random posts from the Federalists in order to make that algorithm work

Discovery is just the worst, lemmy has a problem with it as well but it’s somehow just amplified on Mastodon. There is basically no way for me to organically find things I would be interested in. If I don’t already directly know how to find someone or something I want then I’m never going to come across it.

Compare that with blue sky which has a basic Discovery algorithm that I can pretty easily tune to what I want using filter lists I was able to very quickly get it to understand what type of artists I’m interested in following and what type of content I want to see and what I don’t want to see and through that I have discovered a bunch of artists I otherwise never would have known about.

Mastodon works good enough if you only want to follow very specific people that you already know about and can easily find but if you’re hoping to actually organically discover content I found it awful. The feeds for instances are pretty generic they don’t try to tailor to your interests it’s just a dump of whatever is on that instance or whatever it’s Federated with depending on how you view it which basically just guaranteed it was always filled with stuff I couldn’t give less of a shit about.

It’s very possible that the interface has changed since I last used it but at least when I used it the interface was pretty clunky and not very fun to use at least in my opinion, I did host my own instance for a little while and used a Twitter bot to copy the art of artists I liked over to a mastodon feed but you know all those Bots broke a little while before it became X so ended up giving up on that

Yeah saw that and wasn’t a fan, I’m probably in the minority here but i don’t just blindly want fediverse if its a bad experience. Lemmy is ok, still has some issues but i can use it without being frustrated. But mason just sucks imo

You would, it’s very very straightforward they made it very simple. I literally walked multiple non-technical users through it when it happened because I have moved some of my friends and family to Linux. I won’t say that it wasn’t tedious and that it wasn’t annoying for them but they got through it just fine

I literally consider Debian to be less functionally stable than arch because of Apt. I’ve had apt completely eviscerate systems and then just bail out leaving you with a system that has a completely empty /bin with seemingly no easy way to recover.

Meanwhile pacman has literally never done that, and even on systems that became horrifically broken due to literal data corruption I was able to just chroot in, download a static built pacman, and reinstall all native packages with a single command… It’s nuts how much more reliable and repairable arch ia but people act like it’s frail just because it gets updates more than once every century

The worst part is that convincing people to use less is difficult even when it’s something easy. Let’s say for example that your dryer brakes and you need to replace it and up until this point you’ve been using either a standard resistive electric dryer or a gas dryer. Heat pump dryers are now readily available, of good quality, and use literally 1/4 the power of a resistive electric to do the same job.

If we could convince everyone to just only buy heat pump dryers from this point forward that alone would create a ridiculous drop in energy usage for drying clothes as it’s a very energy intensive task. But people don’t like things that are different and so convincing them to try it is very hard. I had to basically purchase one for my grandparents to get them to be willing to try it and now they love it but initially they were very strongly against trying

There’s also a bunch of dumb but sometimes arguments. Take LED stop lights for example one of the biggest arguments against them is in places where it tends to snow every year they say oh well they aren’t worth it here because when it snows they get covered and if you put a heating wire on them to melt the snow then you’re not saving any power over the standard ones. But it’s like hello rub a couple brain cells together unless you are somewhere where it snows 365 days of the year you’re still saving the power whenever it’s not snowing which is a pretty drastic amount of power across an entire city or state.

I could sit here and give examples all day but suffice to say convincing people to use less even when It ultimately results in a better end result for them is exacerbatingly difficult
