Newsom is a bitter poison pill whose voting record shows that he basically agrees with Trump across the board, and his imitation of trump is barely even ironic. He’s always imitated trump in terms of policy.

There is no intrinsic meaning to life, we are a random chemical reaction that is really, really good at propagating itself, and we’ve evolved to be so good at pattern recognition that we psychologically need to see patterns like meaning where none exist.
My response to that state of affairs is that I get to define the point of life for myself. Some days the point is to advance human knowledge. Some days it’s to protect people I care about. Some days it’s smoking enough weed to make a cloud visible from space. None of those have to sound even remotely reasonable to you because they are things that I’ve seen as the point of my life at various points in the past. Yours can be different, but I bet if you spend some time analyzing your values and what you believe in as a person you can probably identify a few things you find important enough to consider the point of life, even if only temporarily
I used to have repeated ingrown problems with one of my big toes. The eventual solution was the doctor chemically burning my nailbed in that toe and now I don’t have a toenail there and it doesn’t grow back at all
Ehh. We’ve had the divisiveness and vitriol that comes from leftist infighting for at least as long as I’ve been here. That being said, I myself came here from reddit when they banned 3rd party reader apps so idk if lemmy was some pre-corpo internet paradise before I got here. The only thing I really notice when waves of people leave reddit is that we get a handful of conservatives on lemmy when that happens, which is a magical time when all of the disparate leftists on the platform come together to cyberbully the conservatives off of lemmy.

I could probably discover electricity, depending on where I landed. Jewelers of the time could make wire, copper was common, and magnets (lodestones) had been discovered. Realistically though I’d be a dumb giant (ie, speak no known languages of the time and statistically I’d have like a foot on the “tall” people of the era). I’d probably try to find some party trick that looked like magic to people of the era then hope that people would welcome and try to integrate me rather than burning me as a witch. Then I’d probably die in a week or two anyway to some disease lol
Paintballs are trickier than just a water balloon. They have to be rigid/strong enough to survive the blast of co2 or compressed air that propels them, then they have to be soft enough to break on impact without harming the other player.
They also just aren’t that messy. I worked under the table as a referee at a Paintball place when I was 13, and we played such that gameplay didn’t stop when refs were doing paint checks. We’d toss people out if they were intentionally focusing on us but I got lit up probably 10+ times a day, every weekend for 2 years. My jersey and slider pants came clean in the wash every time, and to this day the only lasting blemishes are the shredded fabric on the knees/elbows/ass from when I dove and slid a lot.

Not the person you’re responding to, but it’s hard as an American to see our country as decadent. The majority of us poors are barely making it paycheck to paycheck and don’t experience anything you might call decadent. For the record I agree with you that on the world stage decadence is a valid adjective for the state of the US, but I don’t know that I’d have that perspective if I never lived outside of the US and never got to see it from the outside looking in

The loss of trust is real. I was a phd student doing computer science until this year; my school kowtowing to fascists was the last straw for me. I will have nothing to do with these fucking government contractors who get cheap labor by pretending to also be places of education, as if working a dhs grant for 4 years on a $29k stipend is anything other than illegal sub-minimum wage labor. I’ve come to the realization that getting a phd is nothing more than a measure of how much you will prostrate yourself to an abusive system; it has little to do with intelligence or expertise.
