Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•When I was a kid in the 80s, "computers will teach your kids in school" was one of those future utopia predictions. Now the thought of a computer teaching kids is horrifying to me.
7·1 year agoAbortion bans definitely play into capitalist goals. They ensure impoverished, desperate workers will be even more available to work for a pittance.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do social workers get upset when you don't want their help?
2·1 year agoYou do realize that social workers are at least attempting to make social programs work for people? Like, they are pushing socialism in a real, mostly positive way?
I’m really sorry that these people who just really want to help people are bothering you, but maybe just explain your situation kindly and have gratitude for the people they do help who suffer from capitalism?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Yesterday in Kroger (a supermarket for you non-Americans) I saw a bunch of cans of potato salad. Why would someone buy canned potato salad?
41·1 year agoThat does seem gross and weird.
I will note that this is German potato salad, which does not have mayo and instead has vinegar, so it’s not quite as disgusting as I first thought.
Still, the only use cases I can think of would be camping and end of world prepping.
Yeah, I think something like 15 would be the perfect “fuck you” amount for something beyond Starbucks and fast food. Enough to make it worth going, but only really enough for an appetizer.
Or be really horrible and just take one of the 50 or 100 ones for a decent restaurant, and just don’t get it activated. He won’t find out until they try to run it, I think.
This might be the most horrible idea I’ve ever had.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the rule for which 'national identity adjective' suffix to use?
3·2 years agoAnd Titanic! Wait… No.
Hey! That’s a great scene to remember it by. I’m going to to use this in my lesson about this verb next year. Students will love it.
Thank you for expanding on my point. “Drawn” is the past participle, which must be used in passive constructions such as the above. “Drew” is simple past tense.
Assholes love to fail upwards.
Not trying to be a jerk. Please take this as kindly as it is meant.
The past tense of “draw” is “drawn.” It is an irregular verb in English.
Silly English.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How does affective empathy work with anger?
2·2 years agoI agree wholeheartedly with all you have said. It is especially frustrating when someone else’s emotions prime me to feel that emotion overwhelmingly when the next slightly justifiable situation occurs.
For example, I had a friend who was going through the end of a terrible marriage and we talked about it a lot. She would leave, and then the next thing that came out of someone else’s mouth would often make me snap at them, which would confuse them. I would feel justified in my anger at the time because it felt so real, but later realize it was just carry over from my conversation with my friend.
Luckily, she is divorced now and doing great.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Has there been a person you have only known for a short time that ended up having a big impact on your life?
4·2 years agoJames Taylor’s Fire and Rain is about exactly this situation.
Yes, thank you!
He was definitely an alcoholic, maybe a messiah of art outside of the even-more-predominant-today “industry.” Definitely a misogynist, not sure about genius. Probs?
Not a huge fan, but I think his Columbo episode “Etude in Black” is genius. HIS genius? Not sure.
I’d love to hear others’ thoughts about this auteur. Yes, this is not an original question, but I’ve never been able to ask anyone else about the subject.
Edit: clarified my take on Cassavetes

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's your take on Cassavetes?
31·2 years agoI am not a super fan, and think he’s might be both. I mean, he was clearly an alcoholic, but his rejection of the mainstream was pretty cool for what that is worth. I love also absolutely sure he was a misogynist. His Columbo episode, Etude in Black, is really good and is a gateway to understanding his movies. Soooo… I think my real question might be: was he a genius?
Edit clarified my take on Cassavetes. 😊
Did you meet the man of your dreams, and then meet his beautiful wife? little bitter giggle

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•The Offspring, The Beastie Boys, Van Halen w/DLR, and the B52s. Are there other bands that rock, but are often silly/goofy and funny?
1·2 years agoYes, I also wipe front to back cause I don’t want a bladder infection.
ETA: a yeast infection is actually more likely if you wipe otherwise.

I love thinking about peanut butter being a stripper, thank you.
