I’ve had an antagonistic relationship with a vendor like this, it’s awful. In my case the vendor was supposed to be a fast moving tech startup - the only thing that moved fast there was the revolving door of engineering talent coming and going.

Even worse, my boss had been convinced by their founder that he had all this pull with the company, and since the company was super cool, that made him super cool, and I dunno if you’ve ever tried to criticize something that has made a middle aged nerd feel cool for the first time in his life, but let’s just say it was not a fruitful endeavor.

The number of things I effectively fixed for them via email, the abominations I had to construct to work around the things they refused or failed to fix…bad times.

I hope you’ll update us if you chase this down. I like 404 Media and I want to keep liking them, but only if the reporting is good. Hopefully it’s a typical tech journalism mistranslation where they use Tesseract OCR to scrape PDFs and the author just misunderstood, or something like that.

Edit: after looking, I don’t have any issues. Looks like just a raw list from whatever source, I don’t need 404 Media to try to “curate” that or remove elements that seem irrelevant, they can leave that to us.

Anyone have any particularly good info about AdGuard re: Russia? My understanding is that the devs are Russian. Seems like they have set things up to explicitly be outside control of the regime, but it makes me worry without some ironclad info that it’s safe.

I really wish people would drop this idea that Trump and Musk are stupid. They say and do stupid things, and I’m not claiming they’re some god-tier intelligence playing 5D chess, but they are just so obviously not dumb, and thinking of them as dumb gives them useful cover for their malice. Trump in particular uses that cover to incredible effect.

Feel like saying more? I have a touchscreen laptop and have never built such a habit. Being honest I have trouble imagining how moving my hands off the trackpad and keys can feel efficient. What kinda stuff feels better?

I was with you until this, and maybe this is what people take issue with. Our vote fucking DOES mean something because if more folks voted against Trump, things would be a LOT less terrible.

They would still be unacceptably shitty though, no argument there, and I’ve been trying to show people for a long time myself that “Dems & Repubs vs. us” is a much more accurate description of the conflict than “us dems vs. us repubs”.

Even so, our vote matters a fucking lot when the Republican half of the regime is doing this kind of damage. I can’t really imagine anyone coherently arguing otherwise unless they are also arguing for immediate armed revolution. Voting matters, more of it would help with the far-reaching horrible outcomes of this administration in particular.

FWIW I shifted my monthly Wikipedia donation to The Internet Archive recently and recommend others do the same. Just a few bucks a month, please, it matters. Zero hate for Wikipedia, it’s a critically important piece of human culture, but they’re plenty good on $ and we need to be fostering backups of shared knowledge and historical records. This is important! No one will do it for us, only we who care can do it!

I get lots of mileage out of Hanlon’s Razor, and I acknowledge the rampant incompetence that suggests its applicability, but digital security seems like about the least appropriate place to apply this rule of thumb.
