RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Who buys crazy expensive "new retro" consoles and why?English
6·2 months agoTo the everyday person a Steam Deck and emulation are very niche so they buy what they know.
They are definitely on the easy side but that meant as a kid I could finish it and is one of favourite Game Boy games.
Kirby’s Dream Land has one of the best soundtracks too. Especially “green greens” which I love.
Chance are they will go up in value but it also means holding on to them another 5 years or whatever. Maybe sell them and specifically put the money towards something cool you do want.
Lemmy doesn’t have the niche communities and people don’t want to take the time to customise what it can do for them so get stuck in the same shit as reddit, so then they leave.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Is it still possible to update a game on an Xbox 360?English
17·3 months agoThe 360 does still download game updates.
Most of them aren’t my kind of thing but I’m happy to get Hogwarts Legacy and Outer Wilds.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•What is the cheapest console to get and collect for that still holds up?English
2·3 months agoIf you want something modern then I would recommend an Xbox One S (or a One X if you can find it cheap enough) because of the backwards compatability with pevious consoles and a lot of games are dirt cheap nowadays. Also as a bluray player or streaming stuff if you want that too.

2·3 months agoXbox One S or X is a really good choice if they want to buy physical games. Great backwards compatability and it plays blurays too.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•The Secrets of Sega Channel: VGHF recovers over 100 Sega Channel ROMs (and more)English
26·4 months agoWe’ll cut to the chase: In collaboration with multiple parties, we have recovered over 100 new Sega Channel ROMs, including system data, exclusive games, and even prototypes that were never published. We’ve also digitized internal paperwork and correspondence that reveals how Sega Channel operated, how it was marketed, and what would’ve come next for the service.
Wow!

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•It's kind of funny how many late 90s games had at least one drum and bass trackEnglish
51·4 months agoRollcage comes to mind straight away. 90s and early 00s games were full of jungle and drum & bass.
Lots of people make original music now influenced by the genre, like Pizza Hotline

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•What retro handhelds are the best value?English
3·4 months agoI have a Flip v2 and think it’s great. Very nice to use and carry around but the thumbsticks are average quality. It’s probably my favourite to take out with me.
So far I’ve tried a couple different firmware, MinUI and Knulli, and everything up to PS1 emulation is good but stuff like N64/DC/PSP can be problematic.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•This brilliant Skies of Arcadia is 25, so here's the story of why a screeching noise and a sense of terror is the main thing I remember about itEnglish
3·5 months agoI’m not a fan of the genre either but this is one of the few exceptions. I started a play through (fairly) recently and it holds up very well graphically but does fail in other areas as I would say it is racist in it’s depiction of different cultures. So along with that I also think it one of the games where source code is patchy at best so I doubt a remake/post will ever happen.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Which game would you erase from your memory, in order to experience it fresh once again?English
1·5 months agoI found the game to be better overall when you bump the difficulty up to hard or very hard and avoid using vehicles.
I bought a PS5 recently so I’m going to do another run through on the directors cut version and then on to DS2 which I’m excited for.
Keep on keeping on.

I’ll add to this with another podcast that covers all games. The Wipeout series one from a few months back was great.
