Why not disassemble it and sell all the working parts, if they are rare and expensive?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why does this website have a loading screen to process my cookie preferences?
3·2 years agoYeah, but you can do this in the background without blocking the whole page. In fact you have to go to extra lengths to make it “block” the whole page. Maybe it’s just some css that sets the cursor to the “loading” image, and then ignores mouse clicks for a while, giving the illusion of doing lots of work…

Technology@lemmy.world•Fewer people are using Elon Musk’s X as the platform struggles to attract and keep users, according to analystsEnglish
2·2 years agoI’m not sure which platform (fb, Twitter, YouTube???) it was, but it did count “unfollow” or “block user/block channel/block post” as negative feedback, limiting future reach of this person’s posts to other users of the platform.

Technology@lemmy.world•Reddit CEO Defends His Absurdly High Pay While Not Paying ModsEnglish
3·2 years agoReddit has a lot of users that spend a lot of time there, so it is advertising potential, and a lot of Brands pay for ads on Reddit. Investors hope they will eventually make enough ad revenue to turn a profit.
However Twitter was and is in the same boat, it is a big site with many users, but was never profitable.

Technology@lemmy.world•Reddit CEO Defends His Absurdly High Pay While Not Paying ModsEnglish
837·2 years agoHe gifted himself a ludicrous $193 million compensation package.
Reddit, a 20-year-old company, has yet to turn a profit. In 2023, the platform lost a whopping $90.8 million.
Can someone explain to me how reddit can make a loss, while he pays himself MORE than the loss? Does that not mean that reddit would have made a 113 Million profit before his $193 million compensation package? What kind of business-algebra-gymnastics is at work here?

Technology@lemmy.ml•Modern web bloat means some pages load 21MB of data - entry-level phones can't run some simple web pages, and some sites are harder to render than PUBG
8·2 years ago- Press F12 to open the Debugger.
- Click the “Network” tab
- Press Ctrl+F5 to reaload the whole page (including previously cached files)
- under the list of transfered files in the greyish bar above the debug console (if enabled…) you see the total number of requests the site made and the total filesize that has been transfered; lower is better.

28·2 years ago- I have a limited amount of bandwith on my mobile plan
- if i know a game download is large i go home where i have broadband; i dont download large files over mobile internet
- a text-only website can be rather small with only a few KB. It’s only when you get ““Designers”” that things start to bloat, because the system fonts are not good enough and 2MB in extra fonts no sane visitor will ever notice must be downloaded.
- the marketing department REALLY needs those 10 extra trackers and analytics scripts that take 5s to load, even if they last looked at the visitor stats back in 2021 and the login has long been forgotten.
- the CEO wanted that animated AI powered talking gorilla widget he had seen on a local tradeshow where the customers can ask product or website questions (spoiler: they dont!), which ads a few more Megabytes to each pageload even before you even use it.

41·2 years agoOf-the-shelf SSDs are optimized for speed and price.
Flight recorders are typically specified to withstand an impact of 3400 g and temperatures of over 1,000 °C (1,830 °F), exposure to salt water, and high pressure if it sinks to the bottom of the sea as required by EUROCAE ED-112.
Maybe you could design a flight recorder that uses SSDs, but then you must get it certified again for the new hardware, which will cost a lot of money nobody wants to spend. The next step in flight recorders is to also send a live feed of telemetric data back to some ground station so the last position of the plane is known - with a flight recorder you only get this data after you found the wreck. Currently submitting this signal is optional and can be turned of by the pilot, which is the reason why Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is still missing.

politics @lemmy.world•Mitch McConnell’s billionaire sister-in-law Angela Chao made panicked last call before dying in ‘completely submerged’ Tesla on Texas ranch: report
191·2 years agoI just watched the video above. I’d say it’s a criminally bad design, because the emergency open is completely hidden from the casual observer and completely blending in with the other colors and shapes of the armrest. This makes it useless in an emergency.
There is a reason why Fire extinguishers, seatbelt release buttons, emergency exit signs, emergency brakes in trains etc. are all designed in bright, red stand-out colors with big letters on them.

2·2 years agoThere is a dodgy car rental brand in australia, nz, usa and canada that i had used, and exclusively markets to overseas tourists, but not locals - presumably because locals would know that they should not rent a car that failed the technical inspection and is illegal to drive, which to the surprise of nobody happens a lot with cheap, 20 year old rental cars. It’s very hard to find organic customer reviews of the company, because their own SEO drowns out any authentic customer voices:
-
Their links come from “paid blog posts” (they pay the blogger to write some fluff piece) in private travel blogs, advertising banners, forum posts and articles on big travel sites like trip advisor
-
Their own “travel tips for #country#” websites which offers the same info as other tourist sites, but where they exclusively mention their own business. They have a whole network of their own sites, each for a different country they opperate in, a different language for the customer nationality they are targeting and the age group/price level they want to serve
-
social media channels of course
-
In forum posts where the company is mentioned in a bad way, some new account pops up defending the company, or the thread is deleted soon afterwards.
-
Same with online reviews on google maps, where the company sits at a 4.5 score, but some bad reviews about deposits not being paid out after the car was returned have magically disappeared.
tl;dr: the internet is all ads!

Technology@lemmy.world•Google gets its way, bakes a user-tracking ad platform directly into ChromeEnglish
4·2 years agoYou know what really helps for privacy? Adblockers.
Might be hacked accounts. The same happens on facebook. Some friend had their account stolen, and could not get it back. Half a year later the name and profile picture changes to “Elon Musk”. Reported it to facebook for Scam and “Impersonating public figure”. They have a report category for this exact case, so surely they know that this is a problem and they will take care of it, right? Nope, according to Facebook everything is A-Ok with the account, and no action is taken.
