  • I’m glad it’s not a thing here because as a “positive” incentive I feel like it drives some users to vapid karma farming over actually interesting and new content. That said, I occasionally miss it when there’s some unpleasant commenter douchenozzeling all over a thread and it’s an easy way to see if someone is always an unpleasant ass or if they’re having a bad day and otherwise make valuable contributions to Lemmy.

  • I’m not the person you’re replying to, but I don’t think it’s paranoid to think the three letter agencies have this tech. Back in 2013 NSA could do it, seemingly through a virus. Now? It’s probably more trivial on certain phones. Apparently the “find my iPhone” feature works on the most recent generations of iPhones even when they’ve powered off, and some phones will ring a set alarm when when off (I’ll get back to you with an edit if my older smartphone has that feature).

If you’re being specifically targeted by three letter agencies it might be a concern. Everyone else I don’t know.

  • I have the jlab version and they’re comfortable enough, but they’re pinching the side of your ear so they do get uncomfortable after a while. I still prefer them to standard earbuds, but I’m also prone to ear infections so…

Keep in mind sound quality probably isn’t quite on par with similar priced earbuds, but they’re great for podcasts. +1 for these being a “glad I bought them” impulse buy.

  • Is that true everywhere or just in the US? I know that, at least a few years ago, a bunch of banking software in the US was still in COBOL but parts of Western Europe were modernizing their banking industry. I’m probably going back to school for computer science in the fall and had been considering trying to learn COBOL in my free time, or learning more Fortran (I have actually taken a programming class with Fortran, but because it was aimed at beginners it didn’t really go in depth, but I bet it’d look good on certain resumes). It’s looking like my future is in Europe somewhere, so I’m keeping that in the back of my mind while making decisions.

  • Following Bernie’s lead and doing town hall meetings in Republican districts, which is where all of these sound bites are coming from. And he’s not gaslighting us or sanewashing the actions of the GOP right now which is refreshing.

I’m not sure what else he could be doing right now tbh, he’s governor of Minnesota and we’re pretty gridlocked politically at the moment - nationally the only thing he’s got is being on that losing presidential ticket, his main motivation seems to be the Democrats winning elections to make people’s lives better even if he isn’t the presidential nominee in a few years.
