Because instances have language filters. On lemmy.ml you can’t say “female dog”, it shows as “removed”
Lemmy language filters aren’t that reliable, though, you can still type out bitch if you use circumvention tricks that I learnt about 15 years ago.
I’m not really sure what the point of the slur filter is, in my opinion Lemmy would be better served if the slur filter was used to automatically notify admins of potential abuse (racists, trolls, etc.) rather than try to clean up words.
