A gamer has turned a SEGA Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit (VMU) into a handheld game console. This creative project was done by Tito from Macho Nacho Productions. The upgrade makes the VMU work on its own as a portable gaming device.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15Db2IqCgxwThe updated VMU features a Raspberry Pi Zero W as its core processor, significantly enhancing its gaming capabilities. It now includes a 128x128 pixel LCD display for improved visuals, an 850mAh battery and charger for portability, and a speaker to enhance sound quality. These upgrades enable the VMU to function as a standalone console, capable of playing a wider array
Wasn’t the VMU, from the start, already a portable handheld console? Sure it was just minigames, but thats the V in VMU. I remember playing the Skies of Arcadia minigame.
Dreamcast did have Memory Units that didn’t have the screen so they wouldn’t have been VMUs, but were still MUs. I appreciate the hack of a Pi Zero and a full color screen though. :)
