New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has filed a lawsuit to stop a law passed by the New York City Council granting one-time $10,000 bonuses to low-paid school aides, known as paraprofessionals. The move marks a surprising break with the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which endorsed Mamdani in last year’s mayoral election and had his support for the bonuses during the campaign.
I think this might be a poison pill. Democrats on the council aren’t exactly pro-union.
That’s not so much the claim. The claim is that this is how all collective bargaining in the city is currently setup, and if there’s a precedent for that changes this for a single union, it could impact the ability of all unions to collectively bargain with city.
