China’s ability to mix and match the worst of communism and capitalism in a single dystopian package never ceases to amaze me.

politics @lemmy.world•Supreme Court blocks, for now, new deportations under 18th century wartime law
15·1 year agoIf they have red lines this needs to be it. If they allow the Republican Party to send people to a concentration camp without due process, especially when they claim they can’t get people back, the Supreme Court might as well fire themselves and lock the doors on the way out.

Technology@lemmy.world•White House Says It Has Tech That Can 'Manipulate Time and Space'English
2·1 year agoPutin is in the year 3 of a 3 day invasion, and became a vassal of China in the process.
Trump singlehandedly destroyed American hegemony, removing the tool he would need the most to deliver what the donor class wanted and he keeps losing games of chicken with basically the entire world. And I’m pretty sure Biden would’ve done lots of things differently if he could travel back in time even a few hours.
If they have time machines they are the most incompetent people on the planet.

11·1 year agoDoes our world sound like a world where any President of the US and/or Russia had access to time travel?

The closest, at least outside of China, would be Dailymotion.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•American and British English spelling and pronunciations
2·2 years agoAs a native Portuguese speaker I found it very useful when I started to learn English. And even nowadays having some form of “visual map” between English and Portuguese at least for more erudite words - which tend to be the ones that are shared between more languages - helps me write English better.
The similarities between English and German also ended up helping me learn German.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•American and British English spelling and pronunciations
1·2 years agoGoing by how ortography changes have gone in other languages, I doubt it.
Besides English, if English fix its ortography it’s going to become much harder to learn for speakers of other European languages - as confusing the pronunciation rules and exceptions are, they are caused by writing things similarly to other European languages while mangling the original pronunciation.

131·2 years agoPlot twist: the Tulsi Gabard in the chat was an Iranian spy instead of the real Russian spy.
Ah yes, the F-35 Glorified-Paperweight with the Trumptastic veto on maintenance and critical supplies. Amazing choice for a military operation not approved by the Orangutan-in-chief of the USA.

5·2 years agoOn paper they gave the keys to the Linux foundation, but since they still pay most of the developers working on it the only thing it might achieve is taking resources away from Servo.

politics @lemmy.world•Sen. Lindsey Graham: A pause in U.S. help for Ukraine could be 'worse than Afghanistan'
31·2 years agoYou mean the law regarding Crimea and Donbas that Europe persuaded Ukraine to withdraw a month before Nazi Russia decided to violate the ceasefire? That’s a great example of the ceasefire mechanisms working.
The language law was only approved after the invasion, and given the Ruskyy Mir speech, it’s not surprising Ukraine is not comfortable with promoting Russian inside their borders.

politics @lemmy.world•Sen. Lindsey Graham: A pause in U.S. help for Ukraine could be 'worse than Afghanistan'
81·2 years agoWhy go so far? Ukraine had a ceasefire with Russia between 2019 and 2022. There were even working mechanisms to deal with conflicts. Russia showed it can’t be trusted.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•BREAKING: EA releases C&C source code under GPL3!English
9·2 years agoYou’ll still need to buy the games to get the assets legally. EA is just checking if they can offload the modernization of old games they don’t want to remake to the community to keep the revenue stream going without having to invest on it.
It’s a win-win situation if it works.

politics @lemmy.world•AP sues 3 Trump administration officials, citing freedom of speech
3·2 years agoThe lackeys were the ones actually doing the illegal act. To sue Trump they will need to prove he gave direct orders to censor media and that it’s not a “will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” situation. And even in that case the lackeys still need to be held accountable for following illegal orders.

politics @lemmy.world•AOC says Dems need to play hardball if they help Republicans keep the government open
372·2 years agoIn working democracies that’s how it’s supposed to work. That’s why it’s called opposition not obstruction.
The balance to this is that all parties should be responsible while in the opposition and the party in government shouldn’t try to reform the state according to medieval principles. And this is why American democracy is broken.
