Votes = karma. Low karma can keep you from being able to post in places and can get your post/comment hidden.

Wonderful explanation! I will continue to up/down vote posts and comments as I see fit. 😊
Thanks! That sounds better than killing and reopening the app.
Thank you! No, refreshing does not populate the comments. The only “fix” I’ve found is to completely kill and re-open the app.
Thanks! This helps my understanding a good deal.
I like the lack of karma. Generally I’m using the up/down vote options to express my dis/approval, just like you’ve stated they’re for. Given how different things can be across instances it seems I’ll just have to relearn how I view and interact with Lemmy over Reddit.
Aside from the much smaller user base and communities, I prefer Lemmy 100%. I’m learning to enjoy the smaller user base since it’s also lacking the huge amount of bots and trolls.
I’ve read about the disabling of voting and find it interesting. I enjoy the voting system because it gives me an easy way to interact with a post without having to comment. I usually only downvote if the post is low effort/slop, or the poster/commenter is just being a troll.
Thanks for your input.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is a celebrated invention/discovery attributed to a single person but, had they not done it at the time, it is likely that someone else would have done it anyway not long after?
91·3 days agoSomeone shared an article with me once that explained quite a few inventions were actually developed around the same time in different areas, sometimes across the globe. I have to get to work now so I can’t try to find it just yet, but if I remember I’ll go in search of it when I have a chance. It was an interesting read pointing to a collective consciousness/knowledge base.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hyundai car requires $2000, app & internet access to fix your brakes - what the actual fEnglish
2·6 days agoI never said you were stupid, I said you sound stupid. If I need anything other than a basic toolkit and replacement pads to change my brakes, that’s a problem to me. And yes, I do know what an EPB is, and I don’t like them. Like a lot of electronic systems, they can fail. I’ve driven a car that automatically engages the EPB when put in park and turning it off rarely worked as intended.
Who’s stupid now? Neither of us, but you still sound stupid.

21·7 days agoYou sound pretty stupid. Even if you were right, this is wildly unnecessary to go through to change brakes. I’ve been changing my own brakes since I learned to drive and have never had to touch anything other than the wheels and brake pedals. Your take is wild.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•As an asexual girl who still wants a male partner, would “scheduled sex” be a dealbreaker for men?
16·7 days agoAgreed. Although, I was taught that the reason our privates had darker skin was because it was bruised from constant fapping. “If y’all would just leave them wieners and cooters alone they’d look damn normal!”
I didn’t pull it for almost a month and a half and after no change I decided she was wrong. LOL

Apple@lemmy.world•RIP Liquid Glass: September 15-November 3, 2025
51·22 days agoIt does! It’s different from most of the other iterations of “glass” UI. It’s clean and (mostly) polished. I stated this in a separate comment but I’ll say it here for you, too in case you don’t read my other reply. Everyone in my circle loves it, and one person has trouble reading with it sometimes, but they are in their 70’s and still do like the Liquid Glass. They have enabled the tinting, but aren’t sure if they’re going to keep it that way. This article is kind of misleading, IMO
I think that for people with eyes worse than my own, I can see the problem. The tinted version is definitely needed. But to say it’s horrible and no one likes it is a bit extreme. Everyone in my circle loves it. One person is very happy for the tiny, but they still liked the glass even if they found it difficult to read(this person is also in their 70’s…)

Mlem for Lemmy@lemmy.ml•[ App Store Update ] Mlem for Lemmy 2.3: Liquid GlassEnglish
2·23 days agoYou’re awesome! I like that you take the time to discuss what your user base wants in the app and are looking in to adding it or already have. Makes me appreciate the app even more!
Thanks so much for the work you’re doing!
Also interesting. I’m not opposed to my voting being public, although I have noticed I’ve accidentally hit the vote button without intending to and have no idea if I’ve done it without noticing. I’ll have to audit my own votes sometime to see.
