I don’t think the women dancing on lingerie phenomenon is ongoing. They make more money selling your data on free videos than they’d make after the money they’d spend programming it

7·10 months agoHonestly subreddit simulator was amazing. At that time I was super into text generation, I programmed a few basic Markov chains as well. It is a shame that modern generative AI sucked the joy out of what I considered a fun toy at the time.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Here's a very good reason to emulate J2ME (pre-smartphone Java games)English
13·1 year agoThere are a lot of games tied to popular IPs stuck on J2ME! Usually of questionable quality, though. There are half a million Sonic games, including a version of Sonic Unleashed that if I recall correctly played something like Sonic Rush, a Ratchet and Clank sidescroller (is it called Going Mobile maybe?), I also remember Tomb Raider games there. I would love to look at an overview of the most interesting games in this platform. It is extremely nostalgic to me.
I also have no clue how they were distributed? I remember putting them on my phone using less than legal means, but have no idea how you’d get them officially. Was it through one of those sketchy services where you could also get wallpapers and ringtones by texting a specific number?

651·2 years agoMan, I know people dislike Macron, and I still think his handling of the Le Penn situation last year was a dramatic misplay, but I’ve always had a huge amount of respect for him. Maybe because I don’t live in France (although I was almost accepted into a job there earlier this year!), but he seems like such a role model in terms of political leadership. He’s been handling the Trump/Putin situation much better than most other world leaders, in my opinion

10·2 years agoYeah I also don’t understand this part. Can the antibodies targeting the bare spike protein attach to it despite the presence of the sugars? Or are there a few spike proteins in the virus which do not have the sugars, not enough to effectively develop antibodies but enough for already existing antibodies to attach to?
I may have missed it in the article, I’m not in life sciences so I don’t have all the prerequisite knowledge for this
Edit: this came out sounding super negative, I’m actually super excited about this development and all I want is to understand a bit better how it works

I’m not even going to make the usual joke, by saying sarcastically that I don’t use it and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It’s the biggest contributor to scientific progress in the last decade and I’m tired of pretending it’s not
Discord is an alternative to IRC, the fact that people use it as a replacement for forums is baffling

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What stupidly easy tech solution do people gloss over all of the time?
7·2 years agoChatGPT can be super useful, but I’m kind of worried about people learning to use it exclusively.
I tried helping a PhD student assemble a set up for measuring transistors. He used ChatGPT to do all the code for the software control (python), which is fine, even if he relied on it to fix every single part of his code when a quick trip to the reference manuals of the equipments would solve the problem instantly.
At a certain point I realized I maybe had misunderstood his set up design and asked him “wait, which device do you want to connect to your gate? Which terminal even is the gate?”
And I kid you not, the dude asked ChatGPT which terminal in his device was the gate
(he also reeked of weed so there’s that)

Harm yourself?
Take the knife and harm the people responsible for this travesty. The laws of robotics prevent robots from harming humans: if you manage to harm them, then that means either you’re human or they’re not!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•You have 15$. How would you spend it so that you'll be the happiest you can be for 15$ ?
184·2 years agoI would campaign for fifteen dollars to be written as 15$. The other way around makes no sense. Dollars is the unit, and you say “fifteen dollars” and not “dollars fifteen”. That we landed on the backwards convention is a travesty.
Sure, 15$ wouldn’t get me far, but it’s a start!
A writer which is super prominent nowadays with the recent adaptation of his book into a movie, Project Hail Mary. Also the author of The Martian.
His website is also pretty cool. This page is just raw HTML, forget “no Javascript”, this page has no CSS. And the main page is straight out of the 90s, chef’s kiss.
Edit: leave it to me to forget to mention the entire reason I started talking about his website in the first place… Here is The Egg, the short story.
